NLL Insider - Meet the Eastern All-Star Reserves!

by dunadan, updated on Tuesday, February 24 2015, 01:14 pm EST

The Eastern Conference reserves were picked by GM jmac with a little help from his coach Brad Stevens. They are mostly comprised from the top three teams, with a little individual scoring sprinkled in.

LaMarcus Aldridge (Phi)

The Sixers big man is not even close to being the best or second best player on his own team if you go by ordinary stats. But he is one of their most consistant players despite playing through a hand injury that should have been surgically repaired already.

His +/- are second only to defensive wizard Leonard and he clearly is one of the best bigs in the East, in a league that is dominated by guards. His 15.9ppg are fifth best among traditional big men. It would likely be possible to find 15 guards more deserving than Aldridge, but you will only find two forwards or centers.

Rudy Gay (Mia)

Ever since escaping the Knicks, Gay has been joined at the hip to his GM proid. Three season's in Utah and now Miami, where he has committed to stay for at least another three years. So wherever proid goes, Rudy follows. And boy he delivers.

He's averaged over 20 every season since 2010/11. He's averaged over 25 every year since 2012/13. And as a bonus his $19 million salary will be slashed in half starting next year. Is he a member of the perennial 2k-glitch team? Certainly.

But he is also a NLL All-star several times over. But mostly it was on losing teams, as he has not made the playoffs since, well, exactly since his 20ppg streak began.

Damian Lillard (Phi)

The second Sixer to be selected to the Allstar reserves is Lillard. After falling into vt's lap as the tenth pick in the 2012 draft, Lillard didn't waste any time on his mission to become a star. Now he is still only in his third year and already an allstar.

He hasn't missed a single game so far in his career and has steadily increased his scoring output and efficiency, despite playing on a Sixers roster that seems to get more loaded with talent every season.

The only aspect of his game that could still improve a little is his passing, as his assist-turnover ratio currently sits around 2:1. But other than that, he has it all. He would be a legit threat in all three individual all-star events (Dunk contest, Three-point contest and Skills challenge), should he choose to participate.

Pau Gasol (Bos)

If there is one person more happy about Pau Gasol signing with the Celtics' than Boston GM jmac, it must be Gasol himself. He got away from a middling Clipper team and now is a cornerstone to the franchise that threatens to de-throne the three-time champions from Cleveland.

Jmac himself picked Gasol for the Allstar team, but did he make the right choice here? As good as the Celtics are with him, they are actually playing better with him on the bench. Although his individual numbers are not as gaudy as Gasol's maybe Vucevic would have been the more deserving choice.

But then Gasol was one of jmac's two priced off-season free-agent acquisitions and the clock is ticking on his career, while Nik will have plenty more chances to make an allstar team in the future.

Andre Drummond (Cle)

The selection of Andre Drummond is even more baffling than the one of Gasol. While he is dominating the boards as he should, he is contributing little else and again the Cavs are better with him off the court. His selection looks like a replacement for the injured Blake Griffin, who was originally voted in as a starter.

Why not give the nod to Pacers' newcomer Tristan Thompson? If it had to be a Cavalier (as it should) why not Parker or even Stuckey? If it had to be a Cavalier big, why not Ibaka? Him and Faried are the only players making an appearance without garnering a single vote. Enjoy your time in NY Andre, maybe next year you'll deserve to be there. This time you don't.

Reggie Jackson (Tor)

Reggie is this year's MIP. We knew that after week one, and things have not changed since, despite two brief stints on the bench. These last two weeks, he has been back in full 44-minute mode, averaging over 30 a game to bolster his all-star chances.

The Raptors are now obviously committed to keeping him around and give him every opportunity to do whatever he wants on the court, which mostly is shoot. But to be fair, these last two weeks, playing PG, he also made an increased effort find open team-mates.

That is unlikely to repeat itself during the all-star game. This guy is aiming for the All-star MVP trophy.

Lance Stephenson (Bos)

There is no question the Celtics deserve a third All-Star and this time Stevens and jmac did not go with the chucker who gets his points at the expense of a high-percentage opportunities by open team-mates. They went with this year's captain of the NLL glitch-team, who  is clearly deserving of the last open all-star spot.

Lance  Stephenson has adjusted well to playing point-guard. In Durant's absence you can see his touches and assists spike, while overall he has kept his assists and rebounds steady despite having much better team-mates who command their own fair share of touches.

But he has suddenly become the most efficient point guard in the league. His 52% shooting would likely top the two-guard list as well. Mostly he bullies his way inside where he has his way with defenders that are usually giving up 30 points on him. That is is smart play. Take the high-percentage shots. The Stephenson of a year ago, who was in love with his jumper, wouldn't have played like that,

For him the big question will be whether he can sustain this level of play for the playoffs. His NBA self is going through a major funk which will not leave the NLL version unaffected.
