NLL Insider - One Move Away

by WALLrus, updated on Sunday, January 04 2015, 06:57 pm EST

The NLL is currently so wide open. There are so many teams that are in such a close range of each other. Some teams need to make a move to separate themselves or to take their teams to the next level. One move could be the difference between making the playoffs or not. In this article, we will be profiling these teams and talk about what moves should be made.

San Antonio: The Spurs were the 2nd seed in the West last year and have currently won the last 6/7 but they have one glaring weak spot in their lineup. Reggie Evans is their starting power forward. The Spurs have plenty of gm points as well as both their picks. They could use their 7 million TPE to bring in a better starting power forward. A better power forward paired with their solid back court and Anthony Davis would help the Spurs make the jump for 4-6 seed to a top 3 team in the West. There are plenty of solid power forwards on the market right now.  Someone like Elton Brand or Trevor Booker would fill the spot perfectly. Jason Thompson also looks like he could possibly be available to fill that role and would be a good fit in San Antonio.

Chicago: The Bulls are trying to end their lengthy playoff drought and this year it looks like it could go either way. They have a good back court and good bigs but their starting small forward is Hedo Turkoglu. This team is currently 8th in the East and is in danger of losing that spot unless they upgrade their starting small forward. CJ Miles could be used as solid trade bait. They could go after Tony Snell and Reggie Bullock, who look like they could be moved as a package. Thaddeus Young looks like he may be moved also. The Bulls could even take a risk on a free agent such as Jason Richardson (who may still be good in the game). A slight upgrade to the small forward would mean big things for the team.

Phoenix: In the past few years, GM Pennywise has really turned the Suns in to a perennial playoff team, but they cannot seem to make the jump to championship contender. Right now the Suns have a solid starting lineup but their bench is a little weak.  Because of the weak bench, one or two more role players, the Suns could make it into late May. There are plenty of guys around the league for Phoenix to bring in.

Miami: The Heat are competing in the tough Eastern Conference.  They look good but who knows where they will fall in a few months? The Heat could really use a wing presence off of their bench. Right now their backup wings are Zoran Dragic and Quincy Pondexter. They would be down the river without a paddle if Paul Pierce or Rudy Gay were injured. DeMarre Carroll really jumps out at me as someone that the Heat could really use. He would add good depth and could step in if there were an injury to one of the starters. This team could be anywhere at the end of May if they play their cards right.

Houston: Right now, the Rockets are playing solid basketball. Before this week, their record was even. Their starting big men are Samuel Dalembert and Marcus Morris. They could definitely use another big thrown into that rotation. A new big would not have to be a star, but just someone who could come in and play good minutes. Again this is a spot where I could see Trevor Booker stepping in too. Kevin Seraphin would also be someone for the Rockets to look at. A little depth would help the keep up the good work.

Golden State: Needing another big man seems to be a thyme around the league. It seems like a lot of teams need them and the Golden State Warriors are no exception. The Warriors are currently on the cusp of being a playoff team and are also trying to end a long playoff draught. They have already snagged Dante Cunningham but he is not preforming to the level that they would like. They have had a nice look at free agent Chuck Hayes but trading for one would be the preferable rout for them to take. The same candidates that the Rockets had, Seraphin or Trevor Booker could both fill the role.

Toronto: Since the injury to Anderson Varejao, Gorgui Dieng has be filling the role of starting center the Raptors. He is not very experienced and is a complete wild card.  The Raptors have plenty of big salaries on their bench that they could move to bring in a capable starting center; they could even move Varejao himself. There are several teams towards the bottom of the standings that Toronto could make a trade with and both teams would mutually benefit.

Los Angeles Clippers: The Los Angeles Clippers are 8th in the West even though they lack a quality small forward.  They just brought in Luc Mbah a Moute to help solve that problem, but currently through 4 games with the Clippers he is not getting the job done. If the Clippers want to make the playoffs, they will have to work the trade market for a quality small forward. A good starting small forward may be a little harder to find than another position, but they need to go out and look for one.
