The votes are in and final, and here we announce the Players of the Week
and Rookies of the Week for Week 1!
East -
Eric Gordon
Eric Gordon was a hands down choice here and he simply torched the
opposition this week on his way to a league leading 38.3 points per game, and carrying
his Hornets to an unlikely 2-2 record. He added 5.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists
per game, as well 1.8 steals while shooting 46% and 95% from the line. He
actually scored 36 points alone from the free throw line! Aggressive much? The
Hornets rely heavily on EGor and it looks like he’s set to do everything he can
to get them wins while the rookies catch up…unless of course the right trade
offer comes along and he’s traded. Surely someone can offer something worthy of
38 points per game!
West -
Josh Smith
J-Smoove was a narrow winner of this award this week, pipping Kevin Love
at the post. The Suns were without starter Pierce and key reserve Beverley, but
Smoove got out there and carried the team to a 3-1 record anyway. He was
everywhere averaging 20.3 points and 13.0 rebounds, while pitching in 1.3
blocks per game and managing a double double in all 4 games. He shot an
astonishing 67% from the field highlighted by a 33 point, 12 rebound game
against Minnesota and is set to anchor the Suns for what they hope (and I
personally believe) will be a long playoff run!
West
Rookie - Emmanual Mudiay
Mudiay was a popular choice amongst managers last year as the “tankingâ€
target, but come draft time questions circled and he dropped down the list a
little to the Mavs at number 4. Well eat your hats people! The rookie point
guard looks legit already, narrowly beating out Jahlil Okafor for the rookie of
the week honours, all be it playing at shooting guard this week, which he’s more
than capable of with his size, strength and athleticism. He averaged 22 points,
3.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting it 46% and helping the
Mavs to a 3-2 record. He scored 20+ points in 4 of the 5 games and is set to
start at the SG spot again in week 2. With this flier, he’s already going to be
hard to beat for the ROTY.
East
Rookie - Karl Anthony-Towns
Out East it was a two
horse race for this award…and it was a few 7’0 body lengths between Zinga and
KAT to give Towns the Week 1 win. The Bucks moved heaven and earth…well…a big
chunky allstar C in DMC…to get Towns with the number 1 pick overall, and so far
so good. He averaged 13 points, 11.3 rebounds and 1 block, while shooting 86%
from the line in his first week for the Bucks, all starts at the C spot, and
helped them go 3-1. In the three wins he scored in double figures all three games,
but only single digits in the loss…perhaps a sign? He pulled in double digit
boards in 3 of the games too, and looks set to hold veteran Marcin Gortat to
the bench at least for the foreseeable future.
Congratulations to
the winners in Week 1, and may the odds be forever in your favour!
