News & Notes From Toronto
While the Raptors' season was cut short some time ago by the newly crowned Eastern Conference Champion Philadelphia 76ers, there are lots of headlines coming out of Toronto this week.
The first bit of news concerns the teams current roster. Andrew Bynum, who played with a knee injury during the first round of the playoffs, will undergo surgery. The surgery will take place in mid-July once he returns from a quick trip to the World Cup. "I'm going to wait to do [the surgery] after [the trip] so I can do a proper rehab," Bynum said Tuesday. The surgery will repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, the same injury SG Brandon Roy also had to play through in the first round.
On a more positive note, Kevin Durant will look to start negotiations on a possible contract extension sometime in July. "I hope it happens, man. I'm really emphasizing how much I really enjoy playing for the Toronto team and playing for that city," Durant said in a phone interview Tuesday. With Bynum already signed to a long-term deal, and Brandon Roy looking likely to sign his own long-term contract this fall, the Raptors will be ecstatic if they can get all three signed to play together for future playoff runs.
In an effort to keep their core together, the Raptors also picked up the option of starting PG Mario Chalmers. Chalmers started for the team during their championship run in 2009 and has started for them ever since. His emergence led to the eventual departure of Raymond Felton and the acquisition of Tyrus Thomas.
And while the Raptors continue to do all of this to keep their core intact, rumors still circulate that the team is looking to make moves. While it is no surprise that the team is shopping Kenyon Martin, other, much bigger names have been brought up in trade talks. Mario Chalmers, Jason Kapono and the teams 29th pick in this year's upcoming draft have all been rumored to be on the move. Even stars Brandon Roy and Andrew Bynum are not immune to the rumors, as both of their names have been brought up in trade discussions as well.
