Point Guard

Elfrid Payton:

After a strong rookie season the Hornet's were hoping for a big leap from Elfrid Payton. He had been earmarked as the long term answer at Point Guard and it was also a position that the team was very thin at. Those expectations probably weren't met as he went on to have a comparable statistical output per minute in his second season. The numbers weren't disappointing as such, 15.9 Points, 4.6 Boards, 7.3 Assists, 2 Steals and 0.8 Blocks Per Game looks impressive but it was on over 38 Mpg with a real lack of depth to help Payton man the position. His primary backups were all in and out of the D-League throughout the season with repeated weeks of Mario Hezonja having to transition to the Point Guard spot to help meet the team requirements.

Best Game-

Box Scores from last season have been burnt. This allows for some "fish that got away" stories to stretch the truth. What we do recall is a 32-Point effort from Elfrid matched up against Chris Paul in Week 19. It was his biggest scoring output of the season and came on 14/25 shooting.

Outlook with the Hornets-

Is this the year that Elfrid makes a big leap? Or is he destined to be a solid but not spectacular NLL talent? What Charlotte is expecting this year is actually a dip in his scoring numbers. Payton is primarily a ball distributor and now that he is surrounded by shooters (Zinger, Turner, Ingram, Murray, Harris, Hezonja) the team expects him to be among the top 5 assist leaders in the league. Add to this his defensive prowess and expectations for him to maintain his top 5 Steal rate in the NLL and we have what is shaping up to be a rock solid season for the baby faced, mop haired assassin

Other Point Guards:

Outside of Elfrid, the depth was sparse at Point Guard for the Hornets. The team had been high on Tim Frazier after heavily scouting him in early 2015. He was picked up late in that season but couldn't get an NBA role. Again the Hornet's signed him in Free Agency at the start of last season knowing if he got a chance he could stick in the league. He went on to play 40 Games for the Hornet's during the season. Eventually he was sent back to the D-League and in a cruel twist, Elfrid went down with injury in the same week. The team felt pressure to assign at least one legit Point Guard so Frazier was waived for some temporary relief with the aim to bring him back in when Payton returned to the team. Unfortunately, he caught on elsewhere and the Hornet's missed the boat. Frazier went on the record outstanding numbers in the NBA to finish out the season, will it translate to NLL success...who knows. The Hornet's have tried to address some of the Point Guard short comings already in the offseason, drafting combo guard Jamal Murray and the high potential prospect, Dejounte Murray, to begin developing.
