Fire Sale in Philly?

09-28-2015

PHILADELPHIA- The new is still a month away but GM VT has been more active this summer than usual. After a miserable collapse in last season’s Finals to the Los Angeles Lakers, the indefatigable GM seems to be set on making some changes.

“It’s true, I have been making calls,” VT said from his summer home in Portland, Oregon. “Nothing is close to happening yet, but I do anticipate some big news before the season begins.”

But who will the Sixers trade? With LaMarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard set to make bigger paydays, it is almost a certainty that the team will be in the luxury tax territory going into the season. Surprisingly, neither of those names are currently spiraling in the rumor mill.

“We’ve received calls about Kawhi but now really isn’t the time to move him, if ever,” VT said.

So who is it?

It is undeniable that the Sixers have a glut of shooting guards. Starter DeMar DeRozan and sixth man Kevin Martin have been attached to other teams in some preliminary discussions.

“It makes sense,” a team insider said. “You got young guys like Ben McLemore and (rooke) R.J. Hunter looking for minutes. Moving one of those two guys makes the most sense.”

Initially, it seemed like Aldridge would be the odd man out, especially after expressing dissatisfaction with the team after last season’s loss. But the power forward and the GM spent a weekend in Portland where it appears VT talked Aldridge into staying.

“A sign and trade might still be in the works,” the insider added. “The Aldridge situation is definitely not resolved yet.”

So if the team moves DeRozan or Martin what will they expect back?

“A mix of impact and potential,” the insider said. “The team isn’t giving anyone away, but they are exploring all sorts of options.”

So far, DeRozan has been tied with numerous teams in both conferences while Martin may be heading to a team where he knows the GM well.

“No one on the team appears to be safe,” the insider said. “They are exploring trades for rookies and vets alike.”
