Back-up PG Shuffle
07-19-2015
PHILADELPHIA- Though the Sixers didn’t trade any of their core players during this busy draft period, they did say goodbye to veterans Vince Carter (who was traded to the Indiana Pacers for two second rounders) and Kirk Hinrich in what appeared to be cost-cutting moves in anticipation of some big contracts in the fall.
Hinrich
was sent to the Detroit Pistons after the draft for cash considerations.
According to sources inside the Sixers, the veteran PG fell out of favor with
GM VT after playing shoot-first, pass-later basketball, play that saw him
benched in favor of Will Bynum after the first game of the Finals.
Hinrich did help the team early in the season when most of its starters were out due to injury. He appeared in 66 games, starting in 9 of them where he averaged 6.5 points per game on 38% shooting with 3 assists per game and .5 steals per game.
“We thank Kirk for his year and a half of service in Philadelphia,†the team said in a prepared statement. “We wish him luck in Detroit next season.â€
Hinrich resigned with the Sixers over last summer after being acquired in a trade. He had exercised a player option to remain with the team for the coming season.
Before they sent Hinrich to Motor City, the team acquired point guard Shelvin Mack from the Los Angeles Clippers for cash considerations. Cheaper and six years younger than Hinrich, GM VT said the deal was a no-brainer.
“This is a league that craves youth,†VT said. “When the Clips (GM Andrew) proposed the deal, I said, ‘Why not.’â€
Though
there are no guarantees that Mack will make the roster in the fall, the Sixers
are intrigued with what the player brings to the table.
In 74 games for the Clippers last season, 53 of those starts, Mack averaged 14.7 points per game on 42% shooting. He dished out 4.9 assists per game and grabbed 3 rebounds per game. The only black mark on his stats were his 3.6 turnovers per game, making him 8th in the league (even more than our friend Damian Lillard who clocked in at 10th).
Mack
will have a long summer, however, after undergoing surgery for a separated
shoulder who sustained at the end of the last season. He went under the knife
on June 4th and his rehab is projected to last between 3 and 4
months, making his availability likely for when the league starts again in the
fall.
What do you readers think? Is Mack a better option than Hinrich?
