PLAYER OF THE WEEK WATCH - Week 9
PLAYER | TEAM | WHY | WHY NOT | STATS | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
PER 27.22 MVP | - | He's dominant. He lead the team with 25 points/game last week on almost SEVENTY percent shooting. It's hard to narrow LeBron into the category of "perimeter player", but a wing putting up 25 points per night on nearly 70% is insane. He also took down possibly the best team in the league - the Knicks. | The Cavs aren't quite the dynasty they were a couple of years ago, but LeBron should be able to come up with better than a 2-2 week when surrounded by Drummond, Parker, Ibaka, and others. One loss was to Milwaukee and the other to the Lakers - both good teams, but if you want to win an award you've got to win games you shouldn't, let alone the ones you should. | PTS REB AST STL BLK | |
PER 37.66 MVP | - | He get 7 boards and 9.5 assists per night while shooting over 50% from the field and still managed to score almost 22 per. Playing next to a ball-dominant all-star point guard, he was able to almost average 10 assists for the week. The Knicks are the best team in the league, and this is their best player. | Can you give one of the Knicks stars an award when they had their worst week of the season (record-wise)? He's a scorer and didn't even lead them in scoring. Their wins were against Detroit and Atlanta, and losses were against Cleveland and the Lakers. Give awards for greatness - not barely doing what you were expected to do. | PTS REB AST STL BLK | |
PER 11.91 MVP | - | Rudy Gay is still doing Gay things - just outside of the top 5 in scoring. The Heat missed him so badly that they wen from looking like a decent team to one of the worst in the league without him. Maybe also factor in a sympathy vote here - considering the Heat record and Rudy's newly announced injury, Proid is going to need some kind of trophy to keep him out of the dumps. | They were 0-4. I'm pretty sure there has never been a player of the week to not win a single game. It's just counter-intuitive. Maybe if he averaged 50 points per game, but this was his usual stat-line, which is great, but not enough to garner a real vote while sitting at 0-4 for the week. | PTS REB AST STL BLK | |
PER 19.48 MVP | - | Finally one of these guys has a 4-0 record to get behind. And he's got some pretty solid stats to back it up. 48% from the field and 47% from three is phenomenal for a point guard these days. The Kings cleared up the point guard logjam and Reggie is rewarding their confidence. | He's the only guy on the list not to pass 20 points per game and he also didn't have double-digit assists or rebounds. To add onto it, they didn't manage to take down a single team with even a .500 record. | PTS REB AST STL BLK | |
PER 25.94 MVP | - | Minnesota is no longer a top-heavy team as they've gone to a model that has lots of good pieces around PG, instead of a couple of other stars followed by a quick drop-off. This is his team and there is no question. He put up 25/4/4 and lead the team to a .500 record to keep their narrow division lead over Denver intact. | What was intended to create increased reliance on the superstar looks like it may have just decreased the efficiency. He shot 40% from the field and 21% from deep. At the time of writing, not a single team on their week 9 schedule has a winning record either. | PTS REB AST STL BLK | |
PER 13.34 MVP | - | Perseverance - Lou is having a great season despite seeing his most talented teammates depart and hearing his own name not-shyly pop up in trade rumors constantly. He lead a rebuilding team to a .500 record for the week. They finally gave him the starting nod recently, and he put up 28 points to reward them. | The Mavs beat the 12th and 13th place teams in the Western Conference and needed OT to do it in both games, this could have easily been an 0-4 week against a pretty easy schedule had a few bounces gone differently. He also only shot 35%, which is going to scare away a few voters that have always seen him as a stat-stuffing scorer. | PTS REB AST STL BLK |
