End of the Season Team Awards

It was a rough season for Cavs fans, but the vibe around the team is that it won’t be this way for long. The franchise hit the reset button this offseason, but things seem primed for a quick turnaround. Despite the losses Cleveland racked up this summer, good things were shown. With that being said, let’s look at some end-of-the-season awards for the Cavaliers:

Most Valuable Player: Collin Sexton

Dropping 24.6 points and 5.9 assists this season while slashing .49/.47/.93, Sexton was the one constant for the Cavaliers all year. As the starting Point Guard in all but 4 games this season, he paced the team and gave all he had to elevate the team.

Acquired over the off-season from Memphis, Cleveland is Sexton’s 3rd team in 3 years. It seems he may have found a home here in Ohio.

Defensive Player of the Year: Mohamed Bamba

Bamba is no longer with the Cavs, as he was traded at the deadline to the Bulls, before the team replaced him with KAT at the starting 5 slot. In his time in Cleveland, though, Mo was an anchor down low for the team. Blocking shots, grabbing rebounds, racking up steals, affecting opponents with his length, he did it all.

There wasn’t a whole lot of competition for this award, despite the circumstances. Bamba still played 42 games for the team, so he’s certainly a deserving candidate.

Rookie of the Year: Xavier Tillman

As the year went on, Kira Lewis made this more and more of a contest, but Tillman was a steadier for the team all season. Be it at the 4 or the 5, starting or coming off the bench, he was an effective, helpful player despite being a rookie drafted in the 2nd round. He offers value in just about every area as a rebounder, passer, blossoming floor-spacer, and smart defender.

Tillman is a fan-favorite and everyone looks forward to seeing what he can do next season.

Most Improved Player: Collin Sexton

Look who’s back again. Sexton had a terrific year for the Cavaliers. He averaged career highs in points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, FG%, and 3P%.

His scoring took the most notable leap, going from 13.1 to 24.6 points, 41 to 49 FG%, and 33 to 47 3P%.

6th Man of the Year: Malik Monk

Malik Monk had a rock solid year, coming off-the-bench and being a dynamic spark plug for the team. He averaged 9.7 points and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 35% from distance, while playing alongside rookie Kira Lewis to make up a high-powered 2nd unit backcourt.

Monk will be a restricted free agent this offseason, and sources say he remains in the team’s long-term plans.
