Re-uniting with Ariza
[BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS] Another season, another pickless
draft for the Celtics. One of these days… just one of them, they will keep a
first rounder a draft a glorious rookie and finally have someone on the team
younger than 28 years old.
But for now, the Boston fan base will have to be content with savvy vets and
rough, raw younger prospects. The Celtics GM parlayed another first, the last
one in their arsenal, a 2018 Minnesota first round pick, to the New Orleans
Hornets in a three-team deal. The Celtics shipped Patrick Patterson along with
the first to the Hornets and were able to get back a real gem of a player, one
with terrific history in Boston and one player that should have never been let
go – Trevor Ariza. The Pelicans then moved on the first rounder for three
second-rounders in the 2017 draft.
Trevor Ariza, 32, has one year remaining on his current contract at 7.5
million. Ariza, while on the wrong side of 30, still plays like a much younger
man and has been a model of durability over his career. He has bursts of
brilliance during the 16-17 season for the Pelicans (and the Timberwolves),
with fifteen games of 20+ points, six games with 10+ rebounds and fifteen games
of 4+ three pointers made. He shot the latter at 44% on the season, a terrific
mark.
He played for the Celtics in 15-16, when they made the NBA Finals, and averaged
15 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals. At 6’8â€with good athleticism and great
length, he is the perfect compliment to the team and the Celtics management
seemed thrilled to have gotten him back.
‘As soon as we heard his name was being made available in trade talks, we just
had to have him’ said JMAC.
'A proven commodity like Trevor is an often under-valued asset in the NLL.
We lost something in our team when we traded him away and were thrilled that we
could somewhat rectify the situation and bring Trevor back. He is thrilled to
be returning to Boston and is projected to be the starting small forward.
Everything he does either compliments the players around him or is maximised on
this team. As I said, we’re thrilled to have him back. He will probably see
minutes at three different positions during the season. He’s incredibly smart
and versatile.’
Patrick Patterson was on an expiring contract and appeared to lose his role on
the team as Durant shifted to power forward half way through the season. The
2018 first, as mentioned earlier, belonged to Boston after a trade last season
and is projected to be in the 20s.
