Meh
After
breaking up the team last week, the Timberwolves were somewhat worried about
what would happen this week. The team
started out going 3-0 and getting revenge on Utah after falling to them
previously. The final matchup was
against the San Antonio Spurs, who have already won two games against the
Wolves. To be honest, everyone was
writing this as a win for the Spurs going into the game. The new blood in Minnesota had different
ideas leading the Spurs for the first 3 quarters with a double digit lead for
much of the game. Then the dreaded 4th
quarter happened.
This was one for the ages as Spudspace could only watch helplessly as the Spurs
started off the quarter as hot as you could possibly be. They hit 12 of their first 13 shots. Oh and by the way, that miss was subsequently
an offensive rebound for Anthony Davis and a put back. That lead that the Wolves had built up
evaporated quickly and turnovers and awful shooting doomed the team.
What do we take away from this loss? Well the team feels confident they can play
with the Spurs if the ball just rolls their way a little bit more in the 4th. Jeff Teague has been a slight improvement on
Kyle Lowry with only 1 week to show for it.
Let’s compare the main players of the big trade:
Kyle Lowry: 8.7 pts and 9.7 assists, 5.7
rebs on 38% shooting.
Brook Lopez: 20 pts,
2 assists, and 10 rebounds on 50% shooting
Shelvin Mack: 10 pts
2 assists, 1.7 rebs on 53% shooting
Boston Net: 38.7 pts, 13.7 assists, 17.4 rebounds on 47%
shooting
Jeff Teague: 15.8 pts
and 5 assists, 3.8 rebs on 41% shooting.
Mason Plumlee: 8.8
pts, 2.5 assists and 14.3 rebounds on 63% shooting
Jordan Clarkson: 14.8 pts and 3.5 assists, 2.3 rebs on 46%
shooting
Wes Matthews: 9.5 pts,
1.5 assists, 3 rebs on 47% shooting.
Minnesota Net: 48.9 pts, 12.5 assists, 23.4 rebs on 47%
shooting.
Now clearly we had 1 more player to compare to, so the pts
are somewhat inflated, but it is clear that the trade was closer than was
initially thought. Both squads shot 47%
while rebounding and assisting at a good rate.
It looks like it’s possible this was a lateral trade for both teams,
while both GMs spent a ton of GM points to accomplish it.
In other Wolves news, Avery Bradley is out next week with an
Achilles injury, and Jeremy Lin may still be a couple of weeks away. It’s lucky that Wes Matthews is in town now
and the team isn’t decimated by injury like in past weeks.
