Draft Recap - Thon Maker

With the 10th Pick in the 2016 NLL Draft, the Charlotte Hornets select.....

THON MAKER

How it came about

The Hornet's 3rd lotto pick and this one was actually a reward for being mediocre all season. Inside sources suggest that it was originally the Hornet's plan to trade both the #10 and #11 to move back a draft, however, front office personal spent the half an hour since their previous pick trying to rectify the mess that had been made. This subsequently left them no time to discuss trades around these picks during the draft. With trade options looking limited the Hornet's opted to take a large gamble on the enigma that is Thon Maker.
Almost immediately following the NLL draft, sources broke on the ever reliable internet that Thon Maker may not in fact be the prescribed 19 years of age that had been advertised. He could be as old as 23! Tons of evidence surfaced.... or maybe it was just one yearbook with a photo of Thon. The Maker camp did little to rebuff the claims except provide an actual legal document (Australian Passport) with Thon stating that he is 19 via twitter. Draft expert, Johnathon Givony dropped this bombshell “I first saw Thon Maker in 2012 in LA. His physical progression from then to now has been very similar to what you’d expect from age 15 to 19”. I guess the suspicion cloud won't dissipate anytime soon for Thon but what we do know as fact is - 7'1", the highest vertical jump for a player over 6'11" in combine history, great handle and agility for a player his size, a smooth looking jump shot to build off and a work ethic off the rictor scale.

How he fits into the rotation

Perfectly! The team has assembled tremendous length and potential in the front court with Myles Turner, Kristaps Porzingis and Brandon Ingram. Adding Thon creates another option and is fantastic cover in case of injury or foul trouble to those starters. While he is raw (who on the Hornet's team isn't?), he possesses physical attributes that will still be effective on the NLL court. While he may log minutes in the D-League to further his development, look for him to be assigned moderate bench minutes when made available to the NLL club.
