Thunder 2nd Rounda

Rolling Thunder: 30/06/2016

The Thunder began the day with no less than five 2^nd round picks, including four in the coveted 30s. Picks 31, 34, 37, 39 and 53. Put these with a 1^st round pick at 23 and there was no way they were going to be drafting 6 players, much less 6 players expected to play in the coming season. Their roster is full enough with 15 players either returning or as RFAs before even looking at potential overseas stash players coming over, and then the prospect of drafting! So inevitably they sold off pick 53 early in the day, and at the last minute, sold pick 39 too (in the end drafting for the Pelicans and then sending the player rights). This still left four picks for themselves!

So, with the 31^st pick in the NLL draft, the Oklahoma City Thunder select: Patrick McCaw!

McCaw is a Thunder special if we ever saw one. He’s a wing with good size, he’s athletic and he’s a defender. He also happens to be a great passer and his 3 point shot is developing nicely too. He went 38^th in mocks, and was ranked 32 by ESPN’s Chad Ford, but the Thunder swooped with pick 31 as he was their top priority in the 2^nd round.

Just what they need, and other wing!

With the 34^th pick in the NLL draft, the Oklahoma City Thunder select: Isaia Cordinier!

Another Thunder special, the Thunder love their euros and with a full roster they were clearly going to take some players that they wanted to stay overseas. Cordinier is a quick, agile who can play both guard spots and is already a really good shooter. He’s an explosive leaper and already an excellent defender. He’s only 19, and he’s wet behind the ears, but he could be a good get in the coming years.

With the 37^th pick in the NLL draft, the Oklahoma City Thunder select: Zhou Qi!

Zhou is a giant. He’s 7’2 with a 7’8 wingspan, but he simply doesn’t have the body mass required at this time to play in the NBA. He has great basketball IQ, he can score in the post and outside and he’s a great shot blocker. Basically the biggest knock on him comes down to that body he has. Can he bulk up? That, and there are questions as to whether he is really 20 or if he’s older. Another Thunder stash pick.

So the Thunder got their guys with these three picks, and promptly sold off the 39^th like they had the 53^rd earlier in the day. Of the 3 guys picked, two were considered steals of the 2^nd round in the NBA Mock draft, McCaw and Zhou Qi. McCaw could have been a 1^st round pick, and projects to have a long career at least as a role player in the style of a lesser Andre Iguodala. Zhou is loved by analytics, but all hinges on his body.

“We were very happy to get our guys”, said Nenjabin. “We did look at options for moving these picks but nothing eventuated, and we were happy to target guys that we didn’t think would be with us immediately. We think we picked the eyes out of it, so to speak, and if Patrick comes in and is half the guy we think he could be, it might make our decisions regarding our other young wings very difficult.”
