its a new age

With many teams looking at what may be a full roster available for a 2016/17 campaign another avenue that  front office’s are looking at exploring will be the vastly underrated european big man stocks which there seems to be plenty of scattered amongst many analysts first round mocks for the 2016 NLL draft

This of course would be in the hope they would choose to continue deleloping overseas

A quick look over past drafts sees a trend heading back toward the more skilled big men in the NBA / NLL

2015 – Kristaps Porzingis (9th)

2014 – Jusuf Nurkic (17th), Nikola jokic (33rd), Clint Capela (35th)

2013 – Alex Len (12th), Joffrey Lauvergne (59th)

2011 – Donatas Motiejunas (26th)

All could now be considered value picks in their current drafts (NLL) and while Enes Kanter and Jonas Valanciunas were #3 and #4 picks in 2011 and both have gone onto have pretty good careers value is probably a stretch though.

Onto the 2016 draft class and the trend looks set to continue with a large number a potential candidates either plying their trade in other leagues or leaving the college scene for the big show

Dragan Bender – Croatia, 7’0, 220lbs

A versatile big man capable of playing 3 positions with relative ease, not a great athlete but smooth with a very high bball IQ

Jokob Poeltl – Austria (Utah), 7’1, 240lbs

Another of those 7 footers that can run the floor like a gazelle, often known for getting on top of opponents for pure hustle, copped some flack for being outplayed recently by Domantis Sabonis, those that saw the game also seen constant double / triple teams on Poeltl

Domantas Sabonis - Lithuania (Gonzaga), 6’10, 240lbs

Son of Lithuanian star Arvydas Sabonis this big man has a range of developing post skills but is not a great athlete and hasn’t shown an ability to hit a shot away from the rim. A non athlete centre or a non jump shooting PF hmmm

Ivica Zubac – Bosnia, 7’0, 240lbs

7’4 wingspan and a great / mobile athlete already excellent size for the NBA. Unfortunately has been prone to injury breaking a foot (2014) and injuring a knee (2015)

Ante Zizic – Croatia, 6’11, 230lbs

a Nikloa Pekovic type centre with a light frame and strength has pretty good size for a C but skills posessed will limit him to that position. Has been professionally since the age of 16

Thon Maker – Australia, 7’1, 220lbs

Another 7 footer with a crazy wingspan and rediculous ball handling ability his strength is not good and post moves still pretty raw. Rebounding / boxing out will be tough for thon at higher level

Zhou Qi – China, 7’2, 210lbs

China has been praying for their next basketball star to come through and dominate at an NBA level (sorry jeremy Lin) is Qi that guy has pretty good feel for the game, a high IQ and solid ball handling. @7’2 210lbs things may get messy if he goes down low with todays NBA bigs. 7 rebounds per 30mins in the CBA ?

Juan Hernanagomez – Spain, 6’9, 225lbs

Physically strong Juancho Hernanagomez displays all the skill required by a modern day big big, fast, strong, smart. Juan at the same age playing at the same level is recording a higher PER than Splitter, Rubio, Fernandez, Calderon ect…

Petr Cornelie – France, 7’1, 210lbs

7 foot player without shoes with reported 7’1 wing span and an even bigger standing reach, explosive leaper that can defend pick and roll with ease. Still pretty raw and rake thin though

Gerschon Yabusele – France, 6’8, 260lbs

A french tank, a bull in a china shop type of body kind of like big baby davis with a motor and very high bball IQ…SOLD

10 possible first round big man candidates that could be absolute steals in the first or second round..
