Week 1 Preview

First games of the season and everyone is excited!  Who knows what a new NLL season will bring for teams.  For the Houston Rockets, it’s a season of promise and excitement.  Management has proclaimed Playoffs or Bust!  Many new faces on the team, and it may take some weeks for the lineups to gel together.  This week, the Rockets face 3 teams that were in the playoffs last year, and the Timberwolves may not have made the playoffs, but with PG back they are scary!  The Rockets are without their starting point guard in Brandon Jennings, so once again.  J.J. Barea will be manning the point and dishing those sweet dimes!

The Rockets will be happy to get out of week 1 with 2 wins.  All of these teams are legitimate playoff contenders, and though everyone has injuries, that’s no excuse.

This matchup shows off two of the leagues best small forwards in Melo and Paul George.  This will be a tough test for the hometown Rockets as Nerlens Noel looks to shut down Enes Kanter also.  That doesn’t even start to talk about the Wolves backcourt of Beal and Lowry.   This will likely be one of the losses for the Rockets, but if Melo can pull a big game out of his hat, it may turn into a W.

Speaking of injuries, The Rockets got lucky in that Kyrie Irving won’t be manning the point for New York in this matchup.  They only have to deal with Monroe, Millsap, and James Harden…. Hopefully the Harden discontent will continue and he shoots way too many shots.  The Rockets are hoping that Wesley Johnson can’t touch Melo and that they can keep up on the boards with Monroe and Millsap.  The Rockets may be able to get out of here with a W, but they aren’t counting on it.

Normally, this would be a hard matchup, but as Kevin Durant is out, there’s no telling where the scoring will come from for the Celtics.  They have a great frontcourt, and Ty Lawson is no slouch either.  Will Trevor Ariza channel his inner Durant?  We think that Houston may have Boston’s number without Durant, so let’s hope it works out.  Vucevic may still be upset about the trade a year ago, but it has worked out for both teams, so no hard feelings right?

Denver was a fringe playoff team last season, but they didn’t make any major moves in the offseason, mainly unloading Paul Pierce for a good backup big man in Kyel O’Quinn.  John Wall is one of the best point guards in the game, and Derrick Favors is a great power forward.  Aside from that they have a lot of role players that Houston will look to exploit.  Alex Len is a good young center, but hopefully he won’t be able to keep up with Enes Kanter and the young Turk will have his way this game.  Look for a Rockets win.

So there you have it, a possible 2-2, but it could go either way on most of these games.  Injuries are the key story line for almost every team, but next man up as they say.  Good luck to all teams involved this week, but most of the luck to the Rockets!  Go Houston!
