MAVERICKS NEWS – SMALL FORWARD

Not long to go now folks until the start of the regular season in the NLL. The Mavericks team are gearing up for some pre season games, but it’s the regular season that they are looking most forward too. In our previous news, we took a look at the depth of the Power Forward position. Today we will take some time out to look at what we boast at the Small Forward position as we get ready to tackle the season head on.

Young suited up in 41 games for the Mavericks last season, after the much anticipated Carmelo Anthony trade which had been lingering for a couple of seasons. Thaddeus can play both the Power Forward and Small Forward role which can be a big advantage for him, especially with the fact that he is left a hander, which can be a nightmare for opposition players to defend. Young has worked extremely hard over the off season to take his game to the next level for the Mavericks. He has really good foot speed which helps him on the defensive end of the court, and has the size to push through the paint and get to the basket. Look for Young to mostly start at the Small Forward position this season, but we may see him suiting up at the Power Forward spot on the rare occasion.

Carlisle says - “I love the hustle of this guy. Great at either end of the court and just knuckles down to get the job done.”

Trading the #22 pick (Rondae Hollis-Jefferson) for Doug during the 2015 NLL draft had some mixed reactions throughout the league, but Smokey somehow seems to know when the time is right to reach out for a player and bring them across to the Mavericks (he hopes). There is really only one way to describe Doug McDermott and that is “unbelievable scoring skills.” With the defensive cattle that already exists in Dallas, the team was in much need of some firepower coming off the bench, and they hope this comes in the form of McDermott. It is still unclear yet as to whether or not Doug will see meaningful minutes in Dallas this season. “He is still quite raw when it comes to the NLL.” Said GM Smokey. “We really need him to concentrate on getting better over the next season or two before he will be a big contributor in Dallas.”

Carlisle Says - “We we work very closely with Doug this season to help him develop into an elite NLL scorer.”

Cleanthony Early was a favourite of Smokey’s in the 2014 draft with the GM trying to wheel and deal his way to a lat e first rounder to try and bring the combo forward to Dallas. Unfortunately Early was take at pick 27 by Detroit, but not more than a year later the opportunity came up for the Mavericks to add him to their team. Early is in the same situation as Doug McDermott, Not knowing exactly where he will sit in the rotation this season makes it difficult to gauge how he will go during the season. Early is a fantastic Athlete, with explosive quickness and an impressive vertical leap. Early has all the tools to become a great perimeter defender as well in this league, but it will all come down to work ethic and his willingness to learn. Don’t expect Early to get too many minutes this season as the Mavericks have a few Small Forward/Shooting Guard types in line before him.

Carlisle Says - “Extremely hard worker, but has a way to go to become a permanent fixture in the rotation.”
