Stagnation?

It's been almost two months since you've heard from us at Nets HQ. We last wrote that while the draft and the big DeMarcus Cousins trade rose the team up to a level of respectability, it would be October and November that decided if they would step into the miserable existence of a treadmill team or if they would continue to take the right steps to set themselves up for big successes in the future.

Well... if the first week of October is any indication, this team is just going to sit on the sidelines. WIzKID is possibly going down the fatal path of many GMs before him: falling in love with the core of a roster that frankly, just isn't good enough to contend now or in the foreseeable future. With Cousins they've got a true star player now, a couple of other guys that could turn into  2nd or 3rd options on a great team, but they still have a glaring weakness at starting point guard and just don't feel like a team that is going to be able to pull it together and compete with the best in a stacked Eastern Conference.

Looking around the conference, the bar is set pretty high for locking into playoff position, let alone surviving until the finals. You seem to need a bonafide top 10 player and at least a couple of other all-star level players. Cousins may fill the star role, but it remains to be seen if a post player can still dominate the league in the same manner as a guy like Lebron, Harden, or Durant. But where are the other all-star caliber guys coming from? Terrence Jones and Khris Middleton seem to be the best shots, but it probably isn't this season and it isn't a sure thing looking into the future. Guards Avery Bradley and Cory Joseph would have to step up big time if they're the starting backcourt of the future - that is possible but again, far from a sure thing.
However, this is where the friction is located - the GM sees all of their assets as keys to the future but is also aware that they don't currently have enough to get there. DeMarcus dominating inside is almost going to guarantee picking outside of the top 5, so they don't have another great swing at a star with their draft pick next season. They do have draft picks and GM points to throw out there, which could get them a much-needed headliner for the backcourt without giving up any of the players they love, but WIzKID hasn't really seemed to be active on that front either. It remains to be seen if he's got a plan that he's waiting to put in place or if he's just hoping that something falls in his lap. Only time will tell...
