OKC Season Review Joffrey Lauvergne

Rolling Thunder: 1/08/2015

Name: Joffrey Lauvergne
Age:
23
Height:
6’11
Weight:
220lbs
Position: PF/C

Acquired:

The Thunder acquired the Rights to Joffrey from the Cleveland Cavs for cash considerations when learning the 59th pick in the NLL draft was looking to join the NLL. The Cavs had no roster space so sold his rights and he signed with the Thunder the next day.

Season notes:

Joffrey only appeared in 20 games in his rookie season, but showed some good improvement over that span. Immediately after signing he was thrust into a starting role, which might have been ill-advised. Amare was set to miss the week, and Ersan Ilyasova had been in Nenjabin’s doghouse due to his lack lustre defense, so the more highly rated defender in Joffrey was started. He posted averages of only 3.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, but with 1.5 steals and 0.8 blocks with 38% shooting, in 30 minutes a game. The kid was not ready. He had a week off the following week, before returning to the line-up in week 15 in a minor bench role, and then playing the final 3 weeks, 18-20, with a role starting at 10 minutes a game, growing to 20 minutes and finally finishing the season as a starter in 31.5 minutes. This final starting week showed his growth from his first week in the league as he posted averages of 9.3 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 0.5 steals on 64% shooting. This included a game of 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists, and another of 8 points and 12 rebounds, including 5 offensive. The Frenchman showed something for the future that week.

Nenjabin’s Notes:

We were pleased with Joffrey’s development in his first year. He’s a big body and knows where to be and what to do. He’ll need to continue his development, but we’ll have more big bodies for him to go against on the roster next year which will help. We thought he showed a willingness to defend and get on the boards, and while his offensive game is a work in progress, his hustle and strength can serve him well for hustle points to aid the team.

“Joffrey fit right in with us”, said Nenjabin. “We had fellow countrymen Ian Mahinmi and Damien Inglis already on the roster, which made for a smooth transition, and his skillset is exactly what we want for a Thunder big man. He may never be a star, but he can be a serviceable big man in this league for us.”

2015 Role:

Joffrey is probably currently pencilled in as the teams reserve Center behind Jonas Valanciunas. He and Tiago Splitter are the only currently contracted big men on the Thunder bench, and Splitter is probably better suited to the PF spot. There will be other big men to come in, but being the only big to have already played in the system gives him a notable advantage we’d suggest. Look for him to at least carve out a minor bench role.
