Pick 22 - Rondae Hollis-Jefferson

banenr

Who? With the 22nd pick Dallas Mavericks selected a wing prospect from Arizona Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and promptly traded him to Bucks in prearranged deal for a potential sharpshooter Dougie McBuckets. RHJ is a 6'7, 220 lb 20 years old wing player from Chester, Pennsylvania.

Why? McD was a prized selection in previous draft, but not one that would bear fruits in year one. Bucks hoped to get much needed shooting from their rookie, but he didn't really thrive in his first year, riding the end of the bench or rehabing for large parts of the season. he looked really promising again in summer league and his fortunes might turn around with new winds blowing in Chicago. Bucks might just traded away the next Korver. And for what? ROndae was projected allover the place and has just one major weakness, shooting. Other then that he's a prototypical wing in NBA, athletic, fast, defensive beast, can handle, create. So basically the next, but bigger, TA. The team gambled that he'll learn to shoot adequate to have a role on the team.

College. Rondae played his high school basketball in Chester, where he earned McDonald's All-American honours and Jordan Brand Classic selection. He committed to Arizona, where he played a year with fellow Buck Aaron Gordon. He became known as fierce scorer, rebounder, and shot-blocker. He helped his Wildcats to two consecutive Elite Eight appearances, ironically losing to Wisconsin on both occasions.

Profile. Hollis-Jefferson didn't dominate any single aspect of the box score but his presence was felt all over the court and he was a key piece of the Wildcat team in both seasons. He is a great athlete, measured at 6'7” with a long 7'0.5” wingspan with a strong frame as well and will be a tough match for any wing player. His offense consists mostly of scoring in transition, garbage points, and cuts in the half-court set. He finishes well at the rim and gets to the line a lot. His greatest weakness in his jumpshot as he made only 6 threes last season at 20% and was weak from midrange.

Summer league. Rondae started Summer League strongly, showing his potential on both ends of thefloor, hitting his shots in first half of the league, including over 50% from behind the line. He faded out on offense in last 2 games, but overall impression was promising. Now go on, repeat that shot 1000 times per day whole summer long.

Role. Another rookie that will mostly ride the bench, unless something drastic happens, ie a trade for a star or serious injury bugs. Bucks spent a lot of resources and money on the long time weakness, small forward spot. RHJ projects as a SF for now, but Bucks have Giannis as a starter there and Harris off the bench. And Gordon is right there to take any leftovers. Pre-season will show whether he can play and if he cans teal some minutes from his team-mates.
