Come and Gone

At no other point in Nets history has a more significant player come and gone without stepping foot on the court during an NLL game. The Nets traded for Jabari Parker and Danilo Gallinari, in principle, just 5 months ago (becoming official not much more than one month ago)... thinking that the two forwards showed a good amount of upside to match their trajectory, when compared with Kevin Love. Parker was known to be out for the first half of the season and Gallinari has missed the majority of the season to date.

However, other pressures prevaled - with the Nets already wilting under the luxury tax and staring not only a DeAndre Jordan raise in the eyes - but also a potential Jabari Parker max contract... a $20+ million proposition from this season. They had quietly looked for the right move to correct this situation, but the concensus around the league was less optimistic about Jabari's recover prognosis and the Nets' unyielding search of value left them at a standstill.

Until Detroit came calling again - not the first time the Jabari topic had been broached. But this time, with a renewed interest that this time saw them dangling De'Aaron Fox. The ability to get away from their very heavy forward position in combination with a younger, less injury prone and maybe even higher potential player was too much to pass up. This move signals potentially the first ever time the Nets have made a move more focused on the future, and more importantly the finances. But the coaching staff has indicated that it was greatly predicated on the emergence of both Larry Nance and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson along with the return of Gallo - joining with Khris Middleton to form one of the deeper quartet of forwards in the league.

While this seems more about numbers and positions than a stud prospect - the Nets were quite impressed with Fox in their due diligence. He's not a guy that has come of the gates dominating, but he's already shown enough to know that his ceiling is somewhere around a top tier backup - with expectations that he could surpass Eric Bledsoe for the title of top point guard on the team over the next few years.

Much of the excitement in Brooklyn this weekend is about the fact that they'll have 11 healthy players in the coming week - including all of their planned rotation players. It's been a rough start to the season, but here's to hoping this is the start of the best of it!
