FA Day 1 outlook

The Knicks will see their name called quite a couple of times during free agent day 1, as they have four free-agents above the MLE level.

With Paul Millsap having found a sign-and-trade destination in the Western Conference, the Knicks' front office is now turning its attention towards keeping together the rest of its roster.

Aussie latebloomer Joe Ingles will be the team's highest paid returnee. The defensive specialist and three-point ace is a perfect fit next to Harden and Kyrie. Yes, 14 million for the gangly 30-year old is clearly a lot, but his four-year contract is steadily declining. Hopefully slower than Jingles skillset.

Ingles has indicated he wants to come back, so the Knicks won't have to sweat this signing.

The same goes for fellow aussie Patty Mills. Another 10 million for a 6-foot backup PG is also not a very good contract. But he's much better than anyone else the New York could afford in his stead.

If some team offers a comparable cheaper player, the Knicks would certainly bounce on that, but until that happens the front office is working under the assumption that he will wear orange and blue on opening night.

After these two, things will get more complicated as Zach Randolph hasn't shown much interest in returning so far.

But with Millsap out the door, the landscape should change dramatically. The Knicks, suddenly with a gaping hole at power forward (Bobby Portis switching from basketball to martial arts doesn't help the matter), will still have a pocket full of gm points and Z-Bo's preseason stats looked much, much better than the terrible numbers he put up last season.

In preseason-play he averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds in 16 minutes. Even if those numbers don't quite double themselves in starter's minutes, Randolph, at age 36, should be poised for a bounce-back season.

So look out for the Knicks to pitch Z-Bo into returning and finishing his career in New York.
