Turner-ing the Corner?

Turner-ing the Corner

It just takes a quick glance at the Hornet's roster to realise how polarizing their front court is. It may be a dirty word to some GM's in the league but it screams "potential", and not even the kind you have to wait years to see, the development is coming thick and fast for Kristaps Porzingis, Myles Turner and Brandon Ingram. But even with the league leader in assists on your team, someone is going to fall into the background a little at the offensive end. From this trio, it's Myles Turner. Porzingis and Ingram average 17.7 and 19.1 attempts per game while Turner settles for just 9 attempts per game (pre week 9). Turner has been averaging roughly 11 Points and 9 boards playing next to Porzingis which is a little underwhelming. Questions started to arise from within the team. Does his skill set replicate Kristaps too much for them to play together? Does the team just need to keep adjusting the offense until we find the perfect balance? Is Turner just going to develop a lot slower in the NLL than his teammates?

The answers to these questions could well be 'all of the above'. Multiple GM's have approached the Hornets to suggest that they should move one of the two bigs due to their similarities in skill sets. This week, with Kristaps sitting out with a sore achillies, we got to see Turner opperate with the extra touches. He responded by averaging 22.8 points, 11.3 boards and 1.3 blocks per game. The Hornet's went on to have a 2-2 week (Elfrid Payton choked by missing 2 FT's in the dying seconds of both losses that would have iced the games). After seeing Turner go balls out this week, it's reasuring for the coaching staff to see his display of what we all know he's capable of. With Kristaps returning for Week 10, could we see a move to the bench for one of the bigs in an effort to try and give them more playing time in which the offense can focus around them. Perhaps Charlotte will go back to the drawing board looking at playbooks and offensive sets. The final question relating to slower development is true in at least one regard. At the moment, Myles Turner is a unicorn without a horn (so just a horse?). He protects the paint and can stretch the floor with a silky smooth mid range game...however, in the NLL he hasn't been able to extend his range out to be a threat from the 3-Point line. While team mates rate him as a fantastic 3-point shooter (84), we've seen he has absolutely no tendency to attempt them in game (0). When he dreams at night of a parallel universe that has an NBA league, he sees himself attempting 65 3's already this season at a .415% success rate and 1.6 per game (increasing every month). So in terms of shooting 3's, it seems the Hornet's may have to wait until next season to see that part of his game develop.
