New Faces on Broadway

The Knicks are facing yet another overhaul this offseason. Maybe not among their star-players, but the personnel around them.

First of all, a new head coach will join the squad. Again. But after Derek Fisher, Jeff Hornacek looks like a seasoned veteran even if he only served one and half seasons as a lead coach.

Secondly, there will be lots of changes on the team's bench. GM dunadan will wine and dine Dwight Howard into re-upping, that's for sure. You simply cannot let your stars walk in this league. But those efforts will deplete the Knicks' coffers. They wont have anything left for their other undecided free-agents.

Not that it would make sense to invest there anyway. Hickson and Sloan are on their way to China. Hamilton and Acy were late season pickups no one else wanted. That leaves $10-million dollar man Jared Dudley, who at best is worth half of that amount and still injured Mario Chalmers, who will likely make a mid-season return somewhere else.

Tyler Johnson is poised to sign a poison pill contract on FA day 2. While the Knicks love him and the first two years on his deal will be a bargain, they may end up letting him go too.

So that leaves John Henson and Wesley Johnson as the only two locks to return other than Howard. Both will be paid handsomely, and with the new cap hold rules, the Knicks will even have to spend their MLE on Johnson.

So what will the Knicks depth chart look like going into the free-agent frenzy?

C - Howard
PF - Millsap
SF - W.Johnson
SG - Harden
PG - Irving

That is last season's starting five. Off the bench they will only have:

C - Henson
PF - Portis
SF - Anderson

If you add the other Johnson to that mix and allow Harden to play some PG, the team should be ok as it is.

And few players increase your chances at picking up decent minimum guys, right? Clearly this roster needs some more guards and a big man or two. With so many open spots they will likely bid on every halfway decent player that comes up.

With the spike in salary and luxury cap and no money to spend, the insane tax bill from last year will be much smaller this season. The Knicks will still face a luxury tax, but it is unlikely to be more than just a handful of points this time around.
