Draft Recap - Dejounte Murray

With the 11th Pick in the 2016 NLL Draft, the Charlotte Hornets select.....

DEJOUNTE MURRAY

How it came about

The Hornet's 4th lotto pick originally belonged to the Hawks before coming in via Denver. Like the previous pick, the Hornet's had planned on moving this one for a future asset. Time restrictions forced Charlotte's hand and with the luxury of it being their 4th lotto pick, they swung for the fences and trusted their own scouting team rather then relying on any NBA script. For the longest time the Hornet's had Wade Baldwin pegged as a potential PG candidate should chips fall a certain way. However, in the last few days before the draft they completely flipped and started to take a liking to Washington's Dejounte Murray. Nicknamed "Baby Boy", the kid is raw and a long way from getting any sort of regular minutes. In fact, don't be surprised to see him spend a huge chunk of the season in the D-League. This is a player that the team is willing to wait on though and the coaching staff see huge potential in him and plan on developing him the right way. The Front Office put their balls on the line, using a late lotto pick to select a guy that would go 29th in any sort of hypothetical pro basketball type league.

How he fits into the rotation

Short term, if available the team expects Dejounte to get only spot minutes. He has a lot of tools that can be effective from day 1 - speed, handle and basically being able to get to anywhere he wants on the court. He is raw though and lacks a certain mental aspect of the game - patience, so he can be careless at times. Realistically, the team doesn't expect Murray to be a contributor in volume minutes for at least two seasons. By that time, current starting Point Guard, Elfrid Payton, will be entering his first contract year. A lot can happen between now and then but the Hornet's do feel like Dejounte can be something special down the road. Murray played in only one Summer League game but finished with 21 Points on 8/12 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 assist and 1 steal in 25 minutes.
