Draft Recap - Ingram

With the 2nd Pick in the 2016 NLL Draft, the Charlotte Hornets select.....

BRANDON INGRAM

How it came about

The pick was originally acquired from the LA Clippers in a deal that included Alec Burks and other draft pick considerations. The pick was slated for 7th in the Draft, however, some lottery ball fortune bounced it upto 2nd in what was widely considered a 2-player draft at the top. From that point, deciding on who to take in the draft was as simple as waiting for Detroit to select from the consensus top 2 and taking whoever dropped to them.

How he fits into the rotation

The positives of Detroit allowing Ingram to slip to Charlotte mostly centre around team fit. While Simmons looks like a real talent, a ball dominant Point Forward without an outside shot would not have meshed well with Charlotte's pass first Point Guard in Elfrid Payton. Moves would have to be made to build around Simmons. In Ingram, you get the perfect team fit guy who's versatility will be a tremendous asset. His length and athleticism should allow him to guard 1-3's. In a couple of years if he can add some muscle there is hope he can stretch that out to 4's as well. Instead of conflicting with Payton's strengths he enhances them by continuing to surround the Point Guard with strong outside shooting options.
As currently constructed, Ingram does have some competition for the wing spots and may find himself as a bench player to start the season. Iman Shumpert, Mario Hezonja and Gary Harris all have legitimate claims to be the starting Shooting Guard or Small Forward heading into training camp. You can also add in fellow combo-guard rookie, Jamal Murray, who will be trying to make his mark and earn rotation minutes as well . If Ingram does show some promise in training camp, we could see the Hornet's make a move to try and free up a little extra game time for the high lotto pick. He was given an opportunity in his last two Summer League games to show what he had learnt when the coaching staff rested the other young talent. He responded by averaging 17.5ppg, 3rpg, 3apg, 1spg on better than 50% shooting and 40% shooting from 3-point range.
