Career Averages: 9.1 points @ 0.60fg, 9.8 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 0.8 steals over 14 seasons

Analysis: Tyson Chandler is simply put, ‘The greatest Laker in NLL history’.  He has had an extremely successful career including 11 trips to the playoffs in his 14 year career.  Six of those trips coming with the Los Angeles Lakers with the last two ending in NLL Championships.  Chandler has won a number of individual accolades too including three time Defensive Player of the Year – the last two coming in the past two seasons.  Many pundits will argue that it is Chandler’s dominating presence on defense that has propelled the Lakers to the lofty heights they have reached in the past two seasons.  Whilst some will suggest that big men are not that effective in this league, Chandler’s impact on LAL success would suggest otherwise.

On the All-time lists Chandler currently sits 5th in rebounding with 8539 – only trailing the recently retired Tim Duncan as well as Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard and Zach Randolph.  He is the 2nd All-time leading rebounder in playoffs only trailing Howard.  Chandler sits 5th in all-time blocks per game with 1462 and 7th among playoff leaders at 203 blocks.

He has played 8 seasons for the Lakers – the most for any player and is currently 2nd in scoring, 1st in rebounding, 1st in blocks and 2nd in steals.

Career History: Despite playing for the Lakers for 8 seasons of 14, Chandler’s career like many NLL players has been filled with several trades.

Selected by the Clippers with the 2nd pick of the draft in 2001, he began his career with the Chicago Bulls in the NLL’s inaugural season of 2002/3.  Chandler stayed in Chicago for 3 seasons including 2 playoff runs making it into the 2nd round.  In fact he is the 3rd leading playoff rebounder for the Bulls with 120 rebounds and ranks 2nd in blocks.

In 2005 Chandler signed a 6 year deal with the Bulls however was traded in 2006 to the Lakers in a deal for Stephon Marbury.

Chandler played 3 seasons with the Lakers up until 2008/9 including 2 playoff campaigns which ended in 1st round defeats.  In December 2008, Chandler was packaged up in a blockbuster deal with the Wizards in exchange primarily for Joe Johnson.  Chandler struggled with injuries in 2008–10, missing more than a month with a stress fracture in his left foot.  During this time he was dealt to the Pacers in a multi-player deal as his value seemed to diminish.

Before the 2009/10 season Chandler was dealt to the New York Knicks in exchange for Elton Brand and after another injury plagued season in which he only appeared in 49 games he was sent to the Lakers in December 2010 in in exchange for Troy Murphy.  This coincidentally was the first season which gm greenmig took the helm in LA.  Chandler’s 2010/11 season was somewhat of a renaissance as he helped the Lakers to a 50-32 record as well as making it all the way into the Conference Finals.  His stellar play raising his stock to the point where the Miami Heat offered him a 4yr, $65M deal to join them.  With Chandler demanding a S&T, gm greenmig begrudgingly obliged sending his favourite son to the Heat for David Lee.

'The' Trade: During 2011 – 14 Chandler went on to play for three teams, the Heat, Bobcats and Nets reaching the playoffs twice but getting knocked out in the 1st round.  His play was decent but he was never able to replicate the play he had in a Lakers uniform.

In the summer of 2013, gm greenmig who had been following Chandler ever since he left enquired with gm proid, (who at that time manage the Nets) as to his availability.  After many discussions a deal was finally struck sending Tyson back to LA as part of the NLL’s biggest blockbuster deal of all time(?) in which 5 teams, 15 players and over $80M exchanged hands.  For the record the Lakers sent Paul Pierce and change to the Nets for Tyson Chandler, (and Gerald Green).

Looking back it arguably could be stated that this deal alone set the Lakers franchise on the trajectory they are on today as in the following 3 seasons since Chandler’s arrival in December 2013, the team has made the conference finals once and won the NLL twice.

Looking Ahead: Heading into season 2016/17, the Lakers have locked up Tyson Chandler for another 3 more seasons so it looks like barring a major turn in events the greatest Laker of all-time will be securing the low post for the purple and gold.  The partnership of playing for the Lakers and gm greenmig seems to bring out the best in the defensive minded big man and if all goes to plan he still has another few good seasons left in him and he will finish out his playing days in LA.
