Draft Profile: Pascal Siakam

Magic Draft Profile: Pascal Siakam

New Mexico State's Pascal Siakam

Prospect Analysis

Strengths

  • Motor
  • Mobile
  • Length
  • Excellent rebounder
  • Scores in the paint
  • Has developed consistent midrange jump shot
  • Quicker than average bigs
  • Willing to work to improve
  • Good shot blocker

Weaknesses

  • Has to continue to get stronger
  • Needs to be able to switch on ball screens and guard perimeter players
  • Played week schedule in conference play, so are numbers inflated?

NLL projection: Siakam declared for the draft but chose not to sign with an agent, giving him the option of returning to school if, after competing in the Chicago Combine, he doesn’t like his Draft stock.

2015-16 Season
Siakam was chosen the Western Athletic Conference player of the year and earned a spot on the Lou Henson Award All-America team after a strong season in which he scored 690 points, second in school history, and grabbed 396 rebounds, third most all time. His 76 blocked shots were also the third most in program history. Siakam earned WAC player of the week honors a record five times.

Key statistics: 20.4 ppg, 11.6 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.0 spg, 2.2 bpg, 2.1 tpg, 35.3 mpg, .536 FG, .200 3PT, .686 FT

Cool statistic: Siakam led all Division I players with 27 double-doubles. Of the 11 players nationwide who averaged a double-double, Siakam was the only one who scored 20 points a game.

What Insiders Say
Former New Mexico State (now UNLV) coach Marvin Menzies

“Everyone’s going to target him. Everyone’s going to key in on him, which is OK. I think we prepared him to be a little more versatile and a tougher guard for competitors. He’s just a great human being off the court, very coachable, which makes the journey that much more enjoyable.”

What Outsiders Say
Baylor coach Scott Drew

“He’s one of the best big men in college basketball. He can knock down the jumper from 15 to 17 feet; he can score at the rim and on double teams.”

What He Brings to the Magic: When the Magic sent away a future pick for a late 30's pick and cash people were thinking "hey, what!?!". The Magic were targeting Deyonta Davis and Cheick Diallo... Little did they know that a guy that went 27 in the NBA draft would still be on the board at 38. The Magic knew all about Siakam's game and how he had performed in the college season but assumed he'd be off the board. When the choice came, Diallo was there, the Magic's 2nd target of a group of three power forwards... But decided on Siakam. Why? "He's a better all around talent. It's quite simple actually. There's a reason he was picked in the first round in the NBA and i feel we've got a steal at 38. This young man has a high motor, incredible work ethic to get better and is a great rebounder. He's money from 15-17 feet and has a soft touch with good quickness inside. We'ere really excited to get him here." Said GM Laddas.

The Magic have 2 veteran power forwards that will be coming into the squad via trade when we kick things off, so the expectations on Pascal won't be anything high. He will probably fall into the fourth or fifth big option for the Magic his rookie season... But don't be surprised to see him jump the queue a couple of spots and earn himself a spot on the rotation. The kid can play.
