Salary hell preparations

Bucks made a bunch of moves to prepare for the 2017 off-season. Westbrook will be an UFA at that time, Giannis and KCP will be restricted. The call will skyrocket, which is unfortunate for fans that will have to extend their guys at that time. Bucks, off course will do everything to bring Russ back. The tab had been gathering points for that occasion, will offer a much playing time as he can take and will try to win (it all). There’s no guarantee that it will be enough, but that’s all you can really do. These three players,  al in future plans of the team, will cost at least 75M. Quite a number. Gordon and Lavine will follow next year, with KAT in their footsteps. All in all moves had to be made to accommodate that.

Bucks front office might have been a bit to radical in the steps to free cap and gather cheap assets. 35M where shed off the payroll, 10 were added. Depending on the final penalty for not reaching salary floor,  moves might need to be made. This probably isn’t the time to do them,  November will bring better perspective into that. There are basically two options, either great one of the youngster for a future pick and get an expensive free agent (and trade him after a year) or make a two for one deal, and go after that FA,  or make a cheap for expensive deal (like Vonleh for Varejao).

Tobes is a fan favorite in Milwaukee, can play two positions, scores  efficiently and is  improving as a floor spacer and defender. But Bucks have other players at his position, and his best attribute, scoring, was never really in first plan with other players. The future is clearly Giannis,  and while they can play together, that’s two much money invested at one spot (with Gordon and  RHJ on the bench.

Gortat was acquired for two reasons. Bucks just traded DMC and needed a starting center, the front office was thinking a long game and realized they couldn’t afford Adams after his rookie contract. Marcin was great, but KAT exceeded all expectations and Poeltl was the obvious pick at 9 (NBA draft  made an easy answer to the Jakob-Skal-Deyonta dilemma  - in the end somehow Bucks ended with all three).

Vonleh and Vaughn, while fine prospects and probably nice players in the future, were recycled for future assets. They have no immediate role for this season and are a year closer to extension.
Monetary aspect of the game will play a big factor in the future for Bucks. Some harsh decision will have to be taken in 2018 and beyond. Maybe even the unthinkable. Or maybe we can just add Bucks B to the league.
