Numero Uno

It happened.

The Pistons held their fair share of confidence and doubt that they would get the number on pick, but when the ping pong balls rolled on Sunday, the Pistons best chance fell perfectly into place. The twelfth best pick stayed where it was, no miracle jump, but amidst a crazy second half of the lotto, the Pistons personal pick with the third best chances vaulted into the top spot. The Pistons can pick absolutely whoever they want to truly begin their rebuild and return as a legitimate franchise.

"Well, we didn't do as well as Charlotte", GM Mavs jokingly told a crowd of local and national media to start a post-lotto news conference. The Hornets have the two picks after Detroit's top selection and two later picks in the lottery before the Pistons' twelfth pick, but the team isn't actually complaining. "I think everybody's on cloud nine right now", Mavs explained, "our main goal was really top three. We think there's for sure three stars in this draft and many more possible ones. So when we got top three, it was great, we're gonna get one of those guys that's been on our radar a LONG time. Then it went to two, and it was great, we'll have options. Then it comes on, the first pick goes to the Detroit Pistons, and you realize you have THE option, you decide your fate, you decide who's gonna probably carry your team for years to come."

Eric Bledsoe represented the team at the lottery: Is the team star also a lucky charm?

Some have had concerns over the years with having the top pick, and that concern seems heightened with the makeup of this year's draft, but the Pistons are not afraid. "The way I see it, we can't really make a mistake", GM Mavs told a reporter who asked the hot question, "first and foremost we need just about everything. So there's not really a positional problem and we really like the top talent pretty equally. So it's gonna come down to the little things we find in scouting about certain parts of each guy's game."

Pretty nice options

While Mavs wouldn't name any names or specify the three stars he mentioned before at anytime in the conference, the race for the top pick by critics seems to be between two: LSU's Ben Simmons and Duke's Brandon Ingram. Especially in the last couple of weeks, the consensus for who should be picked first has switched back and fourth. Sources within the organization say that GM Mavs is doing about the same, but also truly feels what he expressed in the press conference: the team can do no wrong no matter who they pick.

The Pistons plan to begin workouts for their two selections later this week. Simmons and Ingram will likely be the first two to try out, but expect more than just those two, and not for the twelfth pick. Detroit will be looking at multiple options at both spots according to sources, stay tuned for more Pistons news in this exciting off-season.
