Henson gets $44 million

Before the 2015/16 has even gotten under way with free-agent re-signings, the Knicks have called a press-conference to announce an agreement on a contract extension with backup center John Henson.

The four-year extension is worth about $44 million and can be as much as $48 million with incentives. The agreement will prevent a situation like the Knicks went through with Monroe, who played on a qualifying offer last season and now will take some convincing to take the Knicks max-money.

"I played every role a man could play on this team and in this organization, from not playing, to playing, to starting [and] coming off the bench," Henson said. "It's good for me. I kept my head down and stayed in my lane, so to speak, and I've been rewarded for it."

Henson played a career-high 65 games last season, which included a successful stint as a starter when the Knicks tried to mix up their stagnant offense at the beginning of games. He averaged 6 points and 7.3 rebounds in 22 minutes per game.

Lowly numbers, considering he is about to earn 8-digits soon. But Henson's worth mostly comes on the defensive end. At least that's how the Knicks' management will try to spin it.

Still, his place going into next season will clearly be on the bench behind Monroe. But look for his minutes to increase as Monroe, Millsap and him will likely get similar amounts of playing time.

"I don't think there's a better situation as far as being a young guy in this league on any team," Henson said. "For them to want me to be a part of this, it's a blessing.
"It's up to us to kind of continue to win games and keep that core together because obviously, you know, winning heals all. That's what we want to keep doing."

With the cap going up, and this extension not kicking in until next year, the Knicks might actually be able to stomach those millions. Unlike the contract Faried got last summer, that quickly caused him to be traded.
