Jameer Nelson joined the Spurs during the 14-15 season. Over the years San antonio have put out a top tier NLL point guard as their starter but have often found that their backup has left something to be desired. GM Leeroy made the decision to bring in dome veteran talent mid way through the season at the expense of a couple of late first round picks. Jameer and P.J. Tucker joined the team and Nelson finally gave the team a player that could start if needed and also be a spark off the bench at the PG position.
Week 10 was his first with the team and due to injuries Nelson was thrown straight into the fire starting for his new team.
Nelson showed the value he would bring the team from the get go. Week 10 saw him put up 22 points and nearly 9 assists per game over the 5 games as the starter. Injury would see him sit for a couple of weeks following but once he returned to the court as the Spurs permanent backup PG the team really got going. The team would go 14 and 6 when Jameer was in the lineup as a backup proving that having a solid guard that can contribute when the starters sit is valuable in this league.
After the season Jameer declined his team option with the Spurs, indicating his intention to test the free agent waters. Jameer is looking at a 3 year contract and the team has indicated its intention to bring the veteran back to help PG of the future Reggie Jackson on his way.
