Pick 14 - Cameron Payne

banenr

Who? With the 14th pick Bucks selected a wing prospect from Murray State Cameron Payne. The pick was acquired from Toronto via Charlotte in excahnge for pikcs 25, 25 and cash.

Why? Bucks entered the draft with just three guards under contract, reigning MVP Goatbrook, 3&D specialist pope and rising high-flyer Lavine. As solid rotation as you can find in NLL (with recent ubr increases to Zach), but as thin as it could get. Bucks almost had the 2nd pick and it looked like they'd get a new starter in D'lo, but things changed and KAT wears green now. Payne was the first option at 14. GM Wolf is weary of guys that rise right before the draft (that's why Payne and Vaughn are Bucks now), reminding himself of the Marshon Brooks situation. but Payne was more need then hype for the team.

College. Payne comes from Memphis, where he played in small private school and wasn't on the radar of the big recruiters coming out of high school. he went to Kentucky, to a small Murray State College in Ohio Valley Conference. he thrived there, finishing with OVC Player of the year award in his sophomore year, averaging 20 points, 6 assists and 3 rebounds.

Profile. Payne's skinny, 180-pound frame is no reflection of his style of play or approach. He's fearless. And he has a killer instinct. He's a great ball-handler, with quickness and shiftiness off the dribble, particularly in the open floor. With the ability to weave through traffic yet maintain vision on the move, you'll often see Payne look to push the tempo and find his team-mates before the defense can set. He tends to get trigger-happy from time to time. His most appealing skill from an NBA standpoint might be his ability to shoot and finish off the dribble. One of Payne's biggest challenges making the jump will be defending the perimeter, where his light, thin body can be vulnerable to getting caught up in picks and clutter.

Summer league. Payne suffered a non-displaced fracture in the ring finger of his right (off) hand in a workout before the summer league. The fracture didn't require surgery, and he had to sit out the next three weeks.

Role. Cameron's role on the Bucks will depend a lot on three factors, his role on NBA Thunder, progress of Zach Lavine as a PG and health, his and team-mates. He could end up in the D-League if he's not ready to break the rotation, beat DJ Augustine for minutes in OKC. Lavine might get the starting or backup PG minutes, depending on his progress in the pre and early season. Any injury to guys in front of him will improve the chances he'd get solid minutes, though he'll have to fight Vaughn and to a lesser extent Wright and Hollis-Jefferson for the chance.
