MVP WATCH - Week 1

PLAYERTEAMWHYWHY NOTSTATS

Carmelo Anthony

PER 18.71

MVP

-
Melo continues his dominance as one of the best scorers in the league after a deep post season campaign last year. Coming out of the gates firing averaging close to 30 points a night and getting to the line in volume and converting for easy points shooting 90%. He led this "new-NEW-look" kings to an impressive opening week finishing 3-1. Has had a history of being one dimensional and definitely showed it in week one not offering much more then what he does on the offensive end. Couple with his below average efficiency even for his standards it makes it hard to justify POTW honours.

Brook Lopez

Everyone associates Boston with KD but people tend to forget who the driving force is. It seems fairly apparent that Bro-Lo is making a name for himself and following suit with the other dominant big men on this list. If he continues this kind of play then KD and Lopez could prove to be the best one two punch in the league. His efficiency is off the charts and is actually rebounding the ball at a high level at least for his standards leading the Celts to a 3-1 opening week. A disappointing loss to Charlotte even with 42 points from Lopez may spell chemistry issues where to much of Brook could be a bad thing... Could he seriously hurt the Celtics more then help them?

Stephen Curry

The baby faced assassin dropped some godly numbers in pre season and everyone held their breath as to how they could stop this Bulls backcourt. Guess what?... He hasn't shown any signs of regression, already openly considered the best shooter of all time he is hitting 6 threes a game shooting 51%... How do you stop that? Not to mention the offence flows through him and he just flat out makes everyone around him better. 50/50/100 club?!?!Maybe he could get to the line more? Maybe we could all sing kumbaya and dance off into the sunset holding hands as well... The Bulls could've full well expected to go undefeated last week before dropping a game against the feisty Blazers, totally Curry's fault.

DeMarcus Cousins

PER 18.23

MVP

-
The Wolves made all the big moves this past offseason and brought over Cousins for one reason. He's continued to dominate and as arguably the best statistical performer in the league. Week one saw him pour in 26 points a game, throw in 12 boards and the fact he gets it done defensively at an elite level. As always extremely efficient converting 53% from the field and 85% from the charity stripe. He "led" the Wolves to a disappointing 1-3 opening week and was -4.8 while on the floor which is confusing and alarming at the same time. This was a team that was considered to rival the Spurs on paper so a few things have to change.

Early candidate for DPOTY people? Hassan is just crushing opponents and it's hard to pick a time he doesn't have the ball in his hands. With Hayward gone and IT sidelined it's all on this guy and he's responded to the fullest. Leads the league in rebounds and top 5 in blocks.Houston only mustered one win in the opening week, in their defence they played some solid opponents but with so many question marks and no one else around Whiteside are his numbers a little hollow?

I'm kinda getting sick and tired of seeing bigs drop 30/12 on the regular but I'm sure Javi is singings songs of rejoice. The Magic have been the surprise story so far going undefeated in week one for I dunno how long. Val was the centre piece of the Cousins trade that everyone mocked but look who's laughing now! This man is leading the league so far in FTM and who could possibly top him?The Poster boy of the feel good story of the year so far so if you're considering not giving him a look then you probably hate innocent children, the loving youth of a women and ice cream.

I thought the Lakers were rebuilding? Seems like they are back in business. Vuce came over last year from Boston and just plodded along but has decided to go nuclear this year dominating the first week with no signs of stopping. 32 PPG with 13 RPG a few steals and a couple blocks?! Thank you very much. His 42 point onslaught against the Suns was inspiring and puts the Lakers straight back into the Drivers seat. Aside from the week one heroics the Lakers went 2-2 in week one with a loss at home against the rag-tag rolling Heat and a crippled Nets squad they probably should've taken care of. Vuce won't have much all star calibre help this year and the Lakers may struggle as the season grinds on. The kid also needs to get in the gym and practice his free throws.

All hail the "Brow". The reigning MVP and Champion picks up where he left off. The model of the skilled and dominant big men who ushered in the new age of todays modern game. The Spurs are headed for another inevitable successful season a they look to topple the west. shooting 50/50/80 is no joke and this kid does it in his sleep leading the Spurs to a 3-1 opening week. These numbers to be honest are a step down to what we're used to seeing from the Super star. Sure it's early days but has he lost a step? He needs to get his rebounding numbers up if he wants to have a chance to go back to back.

Russel or Len in their prime... How much you paying Len? This is the year for the dominant big men so it seems and Len has exploded on the scene at least in the early days. 25 points a night shooting 68% while grabbing 12 boards is ridiculous and this kid is getting it done on both ends. Out goes Okafor and Len is there to pick up the slack and then some. They only finished .500 for the week with loses to Lakers and Dallas. Who else is going to score and put up numbers on this team other then Len and Reggie? Can he sustain this level of play is the real question and excellence in this league is really only judged in the win column.

If you're noticing a trend of dominant and skilled big men tearing up the league then sit back down, you don't need to adjust your television. This up and coming now turned powerhouse Bucks team is well and truly KAT's team to lead and he proves it on the hardwood dropping 30/12 a night while doing a bit of everything else, he's 9.4 FTM is good for second in the league. His 40 point opener dropping the Cav's on the road put the league on notice that this kid is here to make some noise. What do want from me? Perhaps If you asked KAT how he felt about the loss against Orlando he would tell you he could've played better...
