NLL Insider - Round 1 - Sixers 3, Warriors 0

by dunadan, updated on Monday, February 08 2016, 09:50 am EST

Well, the Warriors couldn't handle the third best team that the NLL sent against them. (Actually neither could the other two supposedly better teams this weekend.)

Game one was rather close, the other two were a breeze for the Sixers.

Steph Curry and Klay Thompson combined for 52ppg (30/22) and the Dubs also got a double-double out of Green (14/10), but of these three, only Curry once managed to finish a game with a positive +/-.

Andrew Bogut, who avearged a modest 7/8, on the other hand was positive in all three games. A clear indication Green and Speights will not get the job done at center in the NLL. As predicted Bogut played more than his allocated 20 minutes, with Steve Kerr overriding his game plan, due to how bad his team looked with Bogut.

Against the Celtics, Bogut will receive full starters minutes and Ezeli might get a chance as well.

Harrisson Barnes was completely dismantled by Kawhi Brown. Hopefully he will face better against Kevin Durant.

Game3 : Sweep

Game 2 : Philly takes the series already.

Can the Warriors save face and at avoid a sweep? We will look what went wrong for the Dubs after game 3, before we move on to the Boston series.

Game 1: Sixers take 1-0 lead in close win.

As this will be the first time we see the NBA Warriors perform in NLL play, there is no way to know what to expect exactly. We can only try to judge each player from what we have seen him do on his current NLL team.

The Warriors will play a lot of small ball up front, which is not something we usually see in the NLL, that is still somewhat clinging to the old ways of doing things on a basketball court. The closest to it probably is Utah, that starts 6-8 Faried at center, but the Manimal really is just an undersized center skillwise.

Andrew Bogut vs  Pau Gasol

Bogut will be re-united with Curry and he certainly played better team basketball when he was still with the Chef in Chicago.

He doesn’t quite seem to mash with the other NBA Warrior Klay Thompson on the Kings. With increased playing time, he did increase his output a bit, especially on the glass, but the Kings are better with him on the bench. He will be assigned to play a similar amount of minutes (20) as he does in the NBA, but will likely get the usual 2k14 starter treatment regardless (30+).

n the other side we have another international 7-footer with a similar effect on his new team. The Sixers are good with him, but they are even better with him on the bench. In Detroit the effect was reversed. The Pistons were bad with him on the floor, but even worse without him.

His per 48 +/- numbers are almost reversed between his two teams (-3.1/-7.7 on Detroit, +3.3/+7.7 on Philly).

Edge: Philly. A clear advantage for Philly here. Bogut is simply a defensive presence. Gasol is the same (in 2k14 only, not the NBA any more) and much, much more on offense.

Draymond Green vs. LaMarcus Aldridge

Green doesn’t come close to being the unique force he is the NBA in NLL play. He plays like any other undersized power forward would and shoots only 40% from the floor.

Again, like with Bogut, his team is better with him off the floor, which is a travesty for such a highly talented player.

The Sixers have always been too deep for Aldridge to excel individually. But he is getting the job done. He scores efficiently, especially impressive since he loves the mid-range shot, which is usually a difficult one in the NLL, and rebounds with the best of them.

Edge: Philly. Aldrige is the better-rated 2k player and has a huge height-advantage against Green. He will also see minutes against Speights which makes things clearly lopsided.

Harrison Barnes vs. Kawhi Leonard

Barnes actually is a Warrior in real life, ehm NLL life, as well. He is outperforming his NBA counterpart by virtue of playing on a crappy team. He can shoot it and do a little bit of everything, but does not seem to quite have the tools to became a 20ppg scorer and top option.

Rating-wise Kawhi flushes out Barnes in pretty much every category. His numbers are of course lower, since he is only the fifth option on his team offensively. But Kawhi isn’t fazed, he is about winning and winning only.

Edge: Philly. But not as much of a landslide as the ratings suggest, simply because Kawhi doesn’t get a chance to showcase is offensive talent on a regular basis and perimeter defense is sort of overrated around here.

Klay Thompson vs. Kevin Martin

Thompson’s NLL position is very similar to his NBA counterpart’s. He is playing second fiddle to his point guard.  He is doing so efficiently, with a 55% TS%. The Kings need him on the court to win, but he is not having quite the impact of a Conley, despite his lockdown defender status.

Martin might be slowing down quickly in the NBA. Not so much here, where he is one of the most efficient 2-guards. He shoots almost 50% from the field, almost 40% from downtown and has a PER of 21.6.

Edge: Philly. If he is better than Thompson, Martin is making a case to be part of 2k glitch team.

Stephen Curry vs. Damian Lillard

Steph is having a good season. Numbers are a bit down from last year and his 27ppg are only good for 10th in the inflated NLL’s scorer list. But when he’s on the court his 13-29 Bulls play their opposition almost to a draw. And considering his fellow starters, this must be all him.

Even though his efficiency is a bit lower than last year, especially from down-town, Dame is the engine that has the Sixers humming. Playing next to him in the back-court makes declining Kevin Martin look like the team’s best player.

Edge: Golden State. It is close, but finally one spot that belongs to the Warriors.

Benches:

There is no contest here. Even though they have supersub Igoudala, there is no way the Warriors can can compete with the Sixers’ mix of savy veterans and young up and comers.

Overall:

In my book the Sixers are 5-1, but the game rates the teams as 3rd (Phi) and 5th (GS) overall, making it a close contest that could be decided by the coaches. The Warriors will be running what the games thinks is a representation of Steve Kerr’s gameplan (Kerr/Warriors). The Sixers are running their usual top secret offense.

Game one will start today at 4pm EST. Games two and three will follow Saturday and Sunday. Time TBD.
