NLL Insider - Nenjabin's Draft Grades Pt. 2

by Nenjabin, updated on Tuesday, July 14 2015, 04:46 am EST

San Antonio

Round 1: N/A

Round 2: N/A

Grade:  Ungraded

The Spurs held a handful of various picks through the year, but come draft time they held none. They brought in key guys like Lou Williams, PJ Tucker and Jameer Nelson, but alas it wasn’t enough for them to push deep into the playoffs. For the record, their 1st turned into Jerian Grant and their 2nd Darrun Hilliard.

Toronto

Round 1: Frank Kaminsky (Pick 15)

Round 2: Guillermo Hernangomez (Pick 35), Daniel Diez (Pick 55)

Grade:  B+

This draft grade actually gave me a headache…you can’t fault a guy for taking the best player available at 15 in a 7’1 big man who can shoot and lead his college team to the championship, but I’m not a Kaminsky fan. He will probably make a solid stretch 4 in the league, somewhere a bit like Ryan Anderson but bigger, but he projects to be about as useful on D as the big men he joins in Dirk and Kanter. I am also unsure exactly who would have been a better fit for them here? And the likelihood is actually no one, I just feel uneasy about it.

Hernangomez is a great stash pick at 35. He’s big, strong and likes to play physically which will bear him well when he makes the trip over. He’s young and has drawn comparisons to a less athletic Pau Gasol so I really like this pick for the future.

Daniel Diez also has some nice upside as a stash pick. He’s a bit of a tweener cause of his lack of length, as he plays like a PF but is 6’8 with the T-Rex wingspan (6’6, smaller than height) but he can really shoot the ball and is another guy that likes to play tough. Couple of good stashes here.

Utah

Round 1: N/A

Round 2: Joseph Young (Pick 36), Olivier Hanlan (Pick 37)

Grade:  A+

Lights out scorer? Check. Point Guard with upside? Check. The Jazz had two targets in the 2nd round and courtesy of the Hornets deciding to sell both of his 2nd round picks, they snagged them both. Young is slightly undersized, but he just knows how to put the ball in the hole. He should carve out a Lou Williams type career, which when you look at the reigning 6th man of the year’s past season stats, is a pretty darn good thing. The Jazz boast a formidable young backcourt already, and with time to grow into his scorers role, Young should compliment it very nicely down the track. As for Hanlan, he’s a point guard with great size and can play/defend both the 1 and 2. He’s a terrific scorer as well, but he plays in control doing it also looking to set up teammates. He has a good work ethic and could challenge Devin Harris for the 1st floor general off the bench.

Washington

Round 1: Willie Cauley-Stein (Pick 9)

Round 2: N/A

Grade:  A+

This A+ can arguably be taken with a grain of salt, as it is widely reported and confirmed that GM Darko has traded Pick 9 for a mysterious big name player to play alongside Gordon Hayward and Isaiah Thomas. The A+ however is awarded because had he kept this pick, boom, perfect player for his team needs and system, as well as arguably the best player left on the board. Think a taller, quicker, more agile Nerlans Noel and you’ve got Willie Cauley-Stein, and he’d have fit perfectly next to the more plodding Jared Sullinger. As stated, it remains to be seen what the trade was that took WCS and who Darko will have lining up, and where WCS will be lining up, but for now this pick looks stellar for the Wizards…despite it not being for the Wizards…ok my head hurts…

I hope you enjoyed the read and feel free to flame me to death.
