NLL Insider - The Real Show???

The Real Show

So the NLL Finals are over... Meh. The Lakers just won on a huge comeback… Whoopdidoo. I think we have all been waiting for something far more important. Welcome to the big show. The grand-daddy of them all. The true crown jewel of our NLL season. The first (Annual?) NLL Outside Looking In championships! What is this you ask? Our 14 non-playoff finals haven’t seen any action, so here’s a tournament for you. Seeded by regular season record, top two teams get a bye because they earned it. Single elimination because who has the time. We’re gonna take injuries out of the picture because… fun. Any tiebreakers for seedings will be completely un-scientific because who has time for science. Also teams will be reseeded after each round. Did I take the time to run sims for every game? No. Did I maybe do it for the championship? No again. This is, again, a complete fallacy with no logic needed. So to recap, top two get byes, injuries don’t exist, winner gets not a lot(nothing.

So without any further ado, here is our bracket!

Top Two (You get a bye!)

1. Toronto – Our presumptive favourite based on being the only over .500 team.

2. Memphis – Top team out west, glad things worked out that the top in each got the bye.

The Next 12

3. Charlotte

4. Minnesota

5. Golden State

6. Washington

7*. Clippers

8*. Bulls

9*. TrailBlazers

10**. Brooklyn

11**. OKC

12***. Orlando

13***. Houston

14. Detroit

* Tie Breaker 1: Number of Seven Footers

** Tie Breaker 2: Biggest Disparity Between Tallest and Shortest Player

*** Tie Breaker 3: Smaller Number of Injured Players

Round One

Charlotte vs Detroit: Larry Sanders is Back! He was running, jumping, blocking and rebounding. Eric Gordon hit shots, E-Payton ran the show at the point. Charlotte up 6 at the half. But Larry both ran out of breath and fouled out, Eric Gordon missed shots, and Elfrid turned the ball over 5 times in a 4 minute stretch. Dion Waiters was 2-20 for 6 points, but Eric Bledsoe narrowly missed the triple double, Al Horford got the double double, and the Pistons have the first and largest upset!

Result: Detroit Wins – 96-88

Minnesota vs Houston: Maybe the most star studded match of the tourney, The Jennings-Melo-Kobe lineup is gonna run it out. Minny comes out small with a Noel-George frontcourt against the Splitter-Melo line. The game was a brilliant offensive performance on both ends… 20+ for all three of Houston’s gunners. But Minny had guys to play defense too, so on the go to the second round they go based on the fact they got any stops.

Result: Minny Wins – 118-111

Golden State vs Orlando: If we played this game with injuries, we would have seen a Golden State win. But the Rubio-Bosh-Embid lineup that we’ve heard sims so well comes out and balls. Golden State just doesn’t have the guys to make plays and carry the load. Matching 16-12 lines for Bosh and Joel!

Result: Orlando Wins – 99-86

Washinton vs OKC: OKC refuses to let the media know what positions Butler, Green and Kidd-Gilchrist are playing. They get out there and simply blitz, switching on every play. No idea who was playing where, and the Wiz couldn’t figure it out either. The 2-4 spots forced misses, and Jonas gobbled up 17 rebounds.

Result: OKC Wins – 93-76

Clippers vs Brooklyn: Not to be harsh, but a Twitter poll voted this game as the least interesting match leading into the game… until the game went to Triple OT and Twitter exploded! Hassan Whiteside grabbed 29 boards… in a losing effort. The Nets got into foul trouble late, had to scrape the bottom of the barrel and found Andrea Bargani, who hit three threes on his only shots of the night, one of which was final possession, and they escaped.

Result: Brooklyn Win – 123-120

Chicago vs Portland: Chef Curry with the Pot Boy! Curry puts his stamp on the tourney, he wants that MVP trophy. 46 points with 8-10 from three. No chance for dem Blazers.

Result: Chi-Town stand up! – 106-93

Round 2

Our top two seeds are back. The next round looks like…

1. Toronto

2. Memphis

3. Minny

4. Bulls

5. Nets

6. Thunder

7. Magic

8. Pistons

Toronto vs Detroit: Toronto’s first game featured an exhilarating point guard duel between Deron Williams and Eric Bledsoe. Williams went for 32 and 8, Bledsoe for 17 and 14. The bigs were largely quiet. The difference maker on this night was yet another PG, with Carter-Williams keying a huge 18-2 run for the Toronto bench, which ended up being all they needed to cruise to a large victory.

Result: T-Dot Wins – 104-88

Memphis vs Orlando: Memphis looked to start with a bang and were content to let Aussie Dante Exum operate. He gave them 20 and 8, but took 21 shots and had 7 TOs. Luckily Marcus Smart had a very similar night to cancel things out. The Magic men rode their big combo to the tune of 37 and 19 between Bosh and Embid, leading them into the third round as the lowest seed remaining.

Result: Orl Wins – 99-93

Minnesota vs OKC: In one of the best games of the tournament, defense was front and center. The OKC wings were hell to play against, but on the other side Nerlens Noel was an absolute animal, finishing with the rare points-rebounds-blocks triple double. Kyle Lowry was the key offensive contributor all night, and with the Wolves down 2 with time running out he decides to take the three and…

Result: OKC Wins – 91-89

Bulls vs Nets: Brooklyn did everything. Everyone played well, the team made smart switches, the worked around Bogut and shut dow Big Al. But Steph could not be contained, following up his last effort with a 38 and 16 masterpiece. The team that solves him will beat this Bulls team, but he has been on fire.

Result: Bulls Win – 95-89

Round 3

Our semi-final seeds are

1. Toronto

2. Chicago

3. OKC

4. ORL

Toronto vs Orlando: Disappointing. Our one seed was flat start to finish. While they succeded in slowing the Magic bigs, Marcus Smart had a rare combo of volume and efficiency for him, Deron Williams couldn’t hit anything and Dirk might as well have been on vacation. In a great tourney, this was a rare blowout.

Result: Orl Wins – 103-84

Chicago vs OKC: The terror of a defence vs the unstoppable offensive force so far in this tournament, this game got a lot of press. The game ended up being low scoring, with OKC shutting down the periphery players but struggling to manufacture offense. The game came down to the final 2 minutes, with Chicago up 4 OKC started to foul. Steph Curry missed one, Bogut missed one and Jefferson missed a pair as the headline read “Curry goes for 57 in loss… Frustrated with team?”

Result: OKC wins – 89-97

The Final

OKC vs ORL

The media flocked to Oklahoma for what had to have been the largest event in NLL history. Marcus Smart started the game missing everything, but Smartly(see what I did there) stopped shooting. Jonas Valanunias was the center who looked like a rookie on this night, as Embid was dominant. Bosh struggled to score until the fourth, when he hit a string of 3 mid range Js followed by a deep three when his team was trailing. Ricky Rubio had 4 and 13, Dennis Schroder was 4 of 13, and the score stayed low. The Magic pushed the game to a 89-89 tie with 1 minute left, when Jimmy Butler hit a three, came up with the steal and followed that was a pull-up three that set the house on fire.
