NLL Insider - Team by Team: Philadelphia 76ers

2013-2014 Finish: 60-22

Season Highlight

60 wins and a deep playoff run. The Sixers enjoyed a very solid season, reaching the 60 win mark for the first time since the 2010-11 Sixers took the league by storm (before being swept by an upstart Wizards outfit). 60 wins was good enough for third seed in the East, and after a miraculous series win over Boston, after trailing 0-3, the Sixers then easily handled the Raptors setting up an Eastern Conference finals showdown against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Season Lowlight

Losing to the Cavs 4-1. With the barnstorming Cavaliers running over everyone in their path to the NLL championship, Lebron’s men were too much for the balanced Sixers to handle. Philly were able to take one win off them at home in game three, but eventually succumb to the sheer awesomeness of the Cavs. The Sixers will be out for revenge this season.

Best Trade

The Philadelphia 76ers send Vince Carter, Kyle Lowry and Erik Murphy to the Washington Wizards. The Washington Wizards send Andre Miller, Byron Mullens and Jeremy Lamb to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Philadelphia 76ers send a 2nd-Rounder (Por) to the Washington Wizards. The Washington Wizards send a 1st-Rounder (Was) to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers trade -10 GM points. The Washington Wizards receive 10 GM points.

It was a really difficult decision choosing the best trade from a myriad of great deals, This one was probably the best, based on the comments. VT was able to ship out three guys that were riding the pine for some useful role players in Miller and Mullens, a young wing talent in Lamb and a 1st round pick, that would eventually become pick 2 and Jabari Parker.

Worst Trade

None, has VT ever make a bad trade, maybe Batum for McLemore?

Other Notable Trades

The Philadelphia 76ers send Josh Smith to the Phoenix Suns. The Phoenix Suns send DeMar DeRozan to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Phoenix Suns send a 2nd-Rounder (Pho) to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers receive 45 GM points. The Phoenix Suns trade -45 GM points.

The Sixers receive the better end here, receiving points to help convince Smith to sign, a second round pick, and then moving Smith for DeRozan, who went on to have a great season in Philly.

The Memphis Grizzlies send Joakim Noah to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Philadelphia 76ers send Tiago Splitter and Jeremy Lamb to the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Philadelphia 76ers send a 1st-Rounder (Phi) to the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Memphis Grizzlies trade -5 GM points. The Philadelphia 76ers receive 5 GM points.

Another nice trade which netted the Sixers Joakim Noah, one of the most versatile centers in the league.  It was a fairly even deal with Lamb and Splitter leaving, but I doubt Philly would have gotten past Boston in the first round without Noah.

The Philadelphia 76ers send Ray Allen to the Toronto Raptors.
The Toronto Raptors send Kevin Martin to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Philadelphia 76ers trade -5 GM points. The Toronto Raptors receive 5 GM points.

Yet another good deal for VT, the aging Ray Allen departs for Kevin Martin, who easily bested Allen in terms of output, forming a great combination with DeRozan.

Best FA Signing

No one of note signed with Philly.

Worst FA Signing

Austin Daye- Daye didn’t even last one full day with the Sixers before being released; this release sparked 41 comments and an argument over restricted free agents, culminating in a recent rule change.

Star

Damian Lillard- In his sophomore season, Lillard’s star shone brightly in Philadelphia. Playing in and starting all 82 games, Lillard would get better and better as the season wore on, saving his best for the playoffs. Lillard averaged 16 points, 10 assists and 4 rebounds per game and will only get better from here.

Surprise

Kevin Martin- A talented wing scorer, accustomed to carrying an undermanned offense, Martins numbers barely moved despite having so many great options surrounding him. Martin shot a blistering 46%, 45% and 98%, averaging 23 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assist per game.

Goat

Kirk Hinrich- While the starting PG Lillard dominated, his backup Hinrich really struggled. Brought in to run the second unit heading into the backend of the season, Hinrich was more of a burden than anything else, shooting the ball at a career low 31% and 21%.

Draft Report Card

Jabari Parker- A super gifted scorer out of Duke, Parker would start on most lottery teams, but the Sixers are one of the most talented teams around, still I’m sure he will be handy off the bench.

Shabazz Napier – A shoot first point guard, not unlike Lillard, Napier has a good shot at the backup PG role to begin the season.

Jordan Clarkson – Another point guard, Clarkson has excellent size and good athleticism for the position, he may struggle for minutes this season though.

 Looking to the Future

The Sixers core are all returning for another tilt at it, and with new additions via the draft in Jabari Parker and Shabazz Napier, the Sixers bench gets even stronger. After a long off-season, GM VT’s hunger and enthusiasm for the league should be back in a big way, and the savvy GM will be looking for any way to get his squad to the level of the NLL benchmark, the Cavaliers.

Upcoming Free Agents

Kirk Hinrich- Will probably re-sign in Philly, but will likely be out of favour with GM VT and be placed on the trade block.

Drew Gooden- Another who should return, Gooden may be kept around as big man depth.

Shannon Brown- After barely seeing the court last season, Brown will likely seek minutes elsewhere.
