NLL Insider - Seemed Like a Good Idea....03/04

by vt, updated on Monday, June 23 2014, 02:00 am EST

Can you believe the NLL has been around for 11 years?! A lot of trades have taken place between then and now. In this feature, we examine trades from the 2003/04 season that might have seemed like a good idea at the time, but 10 years later proved to be bad, very bad, for one of the teams involved.

1) Den trades Robert Archibald, Travis Hansen, Juwan Howard, Andre Miller and Michael Ruffin to Por for Michael Curry, Jeff McInnis, Mikki Moore, Zach Randolph, Bonzi Wells and a 2nd-Rounder (Mia).

While this one isn’t the worst I’ve seen, it’s not good for the Portland Trailblazers. There is a lot of clutter and no-names in the deal, but peel away the crap and you got Zach Randolph left. Sure, Andre Miller was a big name back then and today he and Z-bo are the only two left playing. But I tell you what, I would take a dominant big man over Miller anyday.

2) Pho trades Desmond Mason and a 1st-Rounder (Ind) to Den for Joe Johnson and a 1st-Rounder (Den).

At first glance this one is bad, continuing the shitty run for Phoenix. But let’s trace what those first rounders became. That pick Denver received became none other than Kevin Martin. And that the pick Phoenix brought in? Josh Childress. So Desmond Mason and Josh Childress for Joe Johnson and Kevin Martin. You choose!

3) Phi trades Greg Buckner and Nikoloz Tskitishvili to Det for a 1st-Rounder (Det) and a 2nd-Rounder (Det).

Sure, Greg Buckner used to be good and Skita had a ton of promise. However, GM VT often seems to know when a guy’s hype is all used up and moved Nikoloz at the right time. The Sixers then used that pick to score Josh Smith. Many teams have given up solid players for bust picks. This time wasn’t one of those.

4) NJ trades Jason Collins, Kerry Kittles and a 1st-Rounder (NJ) to Hou for Kelvin Cato, Dwyane Wade and a 2nd-Rounder (Hou).

This goes down as one of the worst NLL trades of all time. Who cares who Houston drafted with that NJ pick (Dorell Wright). The Rocketsdbasically gave away Wade in this deal. Wow.

5. Ind trades Roger Mason, Ronald Murray and Daniel Santiago to SA for Steve Blake, Stephen Jackson and John Salmons.

This deal sucks for the Spurs. It’s an example of a mediocre deal where one team got all the better mediocre players. I guess Sjax was a player at the time. So why did SA do it? Your guess is as good as mine.

6. SA trades a 1st-Rounder (Ind) to LAC for Melvin Ely and a 2nd-Rounder (Atl).

Spurs again! Was Melvin Ely EVER worth a first rounder?

7. Mia trades Kobe Bryant, Rasual Butler, Moochie Norris, Bob Sura and a 1st-Rounder (Mia) to Was for Damon Jones, Corey Maggette, Vladimir Radmanovic, Jerry Stackhouse and a 2nd-Rounder (Was).

Wait, what? Kobe Bryant alone for Damon Jones, Corey Maggette, Vlad Radmanovic and Jerry Stackhouse is a stupid trade. But Miami also gave away its first rounder in the deal and some other serviceable pieces? I wonder when we look back at the current Durant trade if we’ll feel the same way. I hope that Heat GM was run out of town for this one.

8) Det trades Chauncey Billups and Jahidi White to Min for Troy Hudson and Joe Smith.

Detroit continues to make bad moves. Ten years ago, Chauncey Billups was the man. Troy Hudson was never good and while Joe Smith was a good player, he couldn’t hold a candle to Chauncey. Win to the Wolves here.

9) Orl trades Grant Hill, Cezary Trybanski and a 1st-Rounder (Orl) to LAC for Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Marko Jaric.

You don’t have to be a magician to see that this was a bad deal for the Magic. Grant Hill, despite his injuries, would go on to play many more good years of basketball. The guys he got back? Not so much. Way to give up the first rounder, too!

10) SA trades Maurice Williams to Phi for a 2nd-Rounder (Phi).

Not a year of smart trading, right SA?

11) Tor trades Jared Jeffries, Morris Peterson and a 1st-Rounder (Tor) to Pho for Jarvis Hayes, Mike Sweetney and Mario Austin.

Good move for Phoenix. After this deal, Jarvis Hayes broke his pelvis and was never the same, Mike Sweetney got so fat that he couldn’t move and who the hell remembers Mario Austin?
