NLL Insider - Post-Lotto Mock Draft

by houndy, updated on Sunday, June 08 2014, 09:47 am EST

I have created the mock draft for everyone’s favorite part of the draft, the lottery. With some help from Merencio about who and where some people should go, I have created this mock. I will complete the rest of it later, when I do a bit more in depth analysis on the remaining prospects.

1. Utah Jazz- Joel Embiid, C, Kansas

The Jazz have finally earned the #1 spot in a very deep draft. The Jazz have Derrick Rose, CJ McCollum, and Victor Oladipo in their backcourt. Although I rate Wiggins over Embiid in my own big board, big men who are quality are hard to come by in this league. Embiid has all the potential in the world, and Utah need a big man. Embiid seems logical here.

2. Philadelphia 76ers (via Washington)- Andrew Wiggins, SF, Kansas

The two Kansas boys go back to back. Wiggins, Parker, and Embiid are for sure going to go 1,2,3 with the order the only question we have. Wiggins is one of the best athletes in the game, and many call him the overall #1 Prospect in the draft. With a higher ceiling than Parker, the Sixers can possibly do the same thing they did with Rondo, trading a SF as a surplus for more goodies in their title pursuit.

3. Memphis Grizzlies- Jabari Parker, SF, Duke

The lack of a SF (and a GM) would be ended with this pick. The Grizzlies have had Danilo Gallinari, whose been out with a torn ACL, and Markieff Morris, who isn’t that good really. Parker is a scorer (many compare him to Melo), and out of these 3, can provide the most impact from the start. The Grizzlies are in an interesting spot; if Utah elects not to select Embiid, and picks a SF, what do they do, with Brook Lopez already occupying the center spot? Will Embiid begin to slide, possibly to 5 or even lower?

4. Boston Celtics (via Minnesota)- Dante Exum, PG/SG, Australia

The Aussie selects an Aussie! Exum is the ideal pick for the Celtics. They have a set of forwards who worked well together, and do not need to draft a Vonleh or a Randle yet. Instead, I see them bringing in Exum and putting him at the 2 guard spot. Exum is a very intriguing prospect, and is a total wildcard. With nothing to lose, I see the Celtics taking Exum and hoping to get the maximum potential out of him.

5. Atlanta Hawks- Marcus Smart, PG, Oklahoma State

With Kyle Lowry potentially moving, and me not needing a PF (which are plenty in this part of the draft), I need insurance for the point guard spot. Why not take a guy, who has a great will to win, and is the second best (if you count Exum as a PG) point guard in the draft? Smart is a fantastic player, and even with his incident with the Tech fan, is a guard many would want on their team.

6. Houston Rockets- Noah Vonleh, PF, Indiana

I’m going to be real. This team was a D-League team for most of the year. Without Kobe, this team is awful. Things might’ve been different if they had acquired Tim Duncan, but this team is very bad. Kobe Bryant better sign his extension, or this team is screwed. Vonleh is the best prospect on the board around this time, and for Houston, they need any player. Vonleh’s wingspan is enormous and his size and ability for an 18 year old is crazy. He and Vucevic would make a lethal frontcourt.

7. Oklahoma City Thunder- Doug McDermott, SF/PF, Creighton

This pick was only chosen because of the need at SF for the Thunder. The reality is, they should trade either up or down, because they have the PG, SF, PF, C positions filled. They should either move up and take a flashy SF (possibly into the Top 3 with their early 2nds & a young player) or trade down and select a Rodney Hood or Cleanthony Early. Dougie can shoot the ball, and is a very smart basketball player, as he was a 4 year player at his university. He has a little athleticism, being able to dunk and run the floor. Overall, the Thunder have some decision making to do @ 7.

8. Orlando Magic (via Chicago)- Julius Randle, PF, Kentucky

Orlando is most likely targeting a PF, and with Vonleh off the board, the next best thing is Julius Randle. Randle is one of the hardest working players in the draft. He is a fantastic rebounder, has great post moves, and can finish under contact. I love Julius as a player, and he will do great in the NBA. He is for some reason falling in the mocks that I’ve seen, but Randle hasn’t done anything wrong, it’s just the others have done a bit more.

9. Detroit Pistons- Aaron Gordon, PF, Arizona

Elton Brand was the starting PF for the Pistons last year. They need a PF, and Gordon is much like Blake Griffin, with his high flying athleticism. I like Gordon here, because a Klay Thompson-Gordon Pick and Roll can lead to two things; Thompson splashing a three or an easy mid range shot, or Thompson flipping it to Gordon for the alley-oop off the roll.

10. Charlotte Hornets- Dario Saric, SF/PF, Croatia

Saric is a win-win situation for the Hornets. If Saric stays in Europe, he can develop a bit and so can MKG, the starting SF right now for the Hornets. If he arrives, Saric is a 6’10 Euro SF, who, like another SF in this draft (Kyle Anderson) is a point forward. He understands the game of basketball really well, and will look to feed players such as Shumpert the ball. Another thing is that Saric can play the PF, so if GM Digeze wants to start MKG as well, he can shift Randolph to the bench and start the Croatian at the PF position.

11. Los Angeles Lakers (via Golden State)- Gary Harris, SG, Michigan State

The Lakers are a team on the rise, with a conference finals appearance, and now, a lotto pick. I see them deliberating between LaVine and Harris, and I see them electing to go for someone more defensive, yet still has a bit of athleticism. That’s what Harris is. Harris would be ideal in LAL.

12. Minnesota Timberwolves (via Orlando)- Tyler Ennis, PG, Syracuse

GM Javi has already talked about how he likes Ennis. With every position outside of the point guard spot filled and 3 1st rounders at his disposal, Minny can take a risk and reach on the point guard out of Syracuse. However, will he change his mind, and look at Shabazz Napier or Elfrid Peyton?

13. Denver Nuggets (via Charlotte)- Zach LaVine, SG, UCLA

Jeez, what a dangerous team that would be. Wall and LaVine have crazy athleticism, and those two would be the ultimate speed/high flying back court. LaVine’s draft stock is purely based off his potential; he didn’t do much in college. However his 46’ inch vertical and the explosive dunks he has shown off has greatly increased his stock. Expect LaVine to rise even more before draft day.

14. Houston Rockets (via New Orleans)- Rodney Hood, SF, Duke

With Houston already filling a need with Vonleh, they look to fill another need, which is in the SF position. Rodney Hood is the best rated small forward in this part of the draft, and the Rockets will most likely pick him up, to round out the lotto.
