NLL Insider - All MVPs

by WALLrus, updated on Saturday, April 12 2014, 11:30 am EST

I thought it would be very interesting to go team by team and name MVP. I specifically looked to go over the MVP, other candidates, and future outlook of the players. I would have loved to do this once the season ended but am going to be in Greece, so I did it now with about a week and a half left in the season- Wallrus

Atlanta Hawks- Kyle Lowry

Only 5 players currently on the Hawks roster suited up for the Hawks on opening night back in November. Kyle Lowry is not one of those 5. Only 1 of those 5 made a case for the Hawks MVP, that was Avery Bradley. Al Jefferson and Chris Bosh have both come on late in the season, but it was too little, too late. Lowry, acquired from Brooklyn, made a huge impact. His stat line included 15.7 ppg, 8.1 apg, 5 rpg and 1.5 spg. He did a little bit of everything for the squad.

Boston Celtics- Nicolas Batum

This Celtics team had guys that balled out the whole season. OJ Mayo, Thaddeus Young and Ricky Rubio all played great basketball, but Nicolas Batum takes the MVP. GM Jmac took a boatload of heat for basically trading Kobe for Batum, but it looks like a nice deal now. Kobe only suited up 5 times, Batum has not missed a single game. He led the team in scoring with 26.7 ppg and played great defense. There is no way that Boston would have had this great season without him.

Brooklyn Nets- Dwyane Wade

The Nets are a team that has undergone huge turnover. Dwyane Wade is third on the team in games played with 48, not because of being traded, but because of injuries. Wade lead the team in scoring in just about every game that he suited up. It is going to be hard for GM Magritte to build a winning team, but DWade definitely needs to be the center piece.

Charlotte Bobcats- Eric Gordon

The Bobcats had some stellar players, but no one that really separated themselves besides Eric Gordon and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. If MKG had played more games, this award might have gone to him, but he only played 44. Eric Gordon consistently scored the ball when the team needed a bucket. He was especially clutch at the charity strike, knocking down 98% from the line.

Chicago Bulls- Michael Carter-Williams

The Chicago Bulls were shooting for the playoffs, but couldn’t mesh. Rudy Gay scored a lot, but he jacked, averaging almost 30 field goal attempts per game. Rookie Michael Carter-Williams did a great job facilitating the team, averaging 9.5 apg. He did a good job of scoring and rebounding, he even put up over one block and one steal per game. MCW definitely outplayed expectations. He will be a force in the Chi-Town for season to come.

Cleveland Cavaliers- LeBron James

The Cleveland Cavaliers did not make a single trade all year, but why would they? They are on pace for a record breaking season. LeBron James is the main reason for this success. He does a little bit of everything. Scoring, passing, rebounding, defence… He does it all. He is the best player in basketball. The Cavaliers had a bunch of really solid players, this team is built around LeBron.

Dallas Mavericks- Carmelo Anthony

The Dallas Mavericks have been very successful this season, that is especially in part to Carmelo Anthony. Melo is 3rd in the league, putting up 34.6 ppg, while playing a majority of the season out of position. The Mavs were filled with many players that had contributed but none really stand out besides Anthony.

Denver Nuggets- John Wall

The Denver Nuggets were expected to go through a rebuilding year, but that is not what happened. They surprised a lot of people. Former #1 pick John Wall finally played like a number 1 pick and it was amazing. He was top 10 in the NLL in both points and assists. Journeyman CJ Miles also had a coming out year, putting up 22 ppg. John Wall led the Nuggets to the Playoffs and looks to be a mainstay in the Mile High.

Detroit Pistons- Rodney Stuckey

The Detroit Pistons were a real disappointment this year. They had 4 guys put up over 16 ppg, then production really dropped off. Rodney Stuckey is currently 2nd on the team in points and leads them in both steals and assists. Stuckey energized the team on offense and was one of their better defensive players. The Pistons would love to have Stuckey back, but his future with the team is unsure since he is a unrestricted free agent this coming summer.

Golden State Warriors- JJ Hickson

JJ Hickson was very stellar for the Golden State Warriors this season. He put up 15.8 ppg and 12.1 rpg. He was a monster on the offensive glass. Most importantly he stayed healthy for the team most of the year. Hopefully Hickson will be able to recover from his torn ACL before next season starts so the Warriors can start to win.

Houston Rockets- Nikola Vucevic

This season has been a disaster for the Rockets. Once being traded to Houston from New Orleans, Vucevic upped his average by 5 ppg. He averaged a double double, while being a force in the paint. The only other player worthy of the title of MVP on this squad is Randy Foye, who averaged 23.5 ppg, but he scored because someone on this team had to shoot.

Indiana Pacers- Dorell Wright

Dorell Wright balled out for the Pacers this past year. Blake Griffin might have had the best stat line, but Dorell Wright came out and surprised people. There is no way that this team would have been this good if it wasn't for “Mr. 2K Glitch”. He is on a 2 year deal and GM Sheed would be ecstatic if he puts up these numbers next year.

LA Clippers- Monta Ellis and David Lee (tie)

Two Clippers really separated themselves this season. Monta Ellis was the go-to scorer for the Clips this year. He put up 27.4 ppg as well as putting up over 5 rpg and 5 apg. David Lee was also great. Lee scored 19.8 ppg and finished 2nd in the league with 12.6 rpg. The Clippers are likely to make the Playoffs and could even give the 1 seed a run for their money.

LA Lakers- Andre Iguodala

First year Laker Andre Iguodala was a crucial part of LA’s 50 win season. Iggy did a bit of everything, but his defense was exceptional, probably the team's best defender. He will be in purple and gold for a long time.

Memphis Grizzlies- Jeff Teague

The only thing Grizzlies fans have to look forward to is the draft. Putting up solid numbers, Jeff Teague made his point guard position the only position that they aren't looking to replace with a rookie.

Miami Heat- Steph Curry

It looks like Steph Curry led his team to the promise land. Curry played very well, but what else have you come to expect with the young point guard? He put up 20.7 ppg and 9 apg. He also shot 39% for long range. GM TMacf has put together an amazing young backcourt with Curry and Bradley Beal, they will likely be one of the NLL’s best guard combos for many years to come.

Milwaukee Bucks- Russell Westbrook

Russell Westbrook battled with injuries all year, but still separated himself as the team’s MVP. With Jrue Holliday at point guard, Russell was forced to play out of position at shooting guard. He put up 27.7 ppg. With 2 natural point guards on the roster, there is a good chance that one of them will be traded.

Minnesota Timberwolves- Ed Davis

The Minnesota Timberwolves were a disappointment. Dion Waiters led the team in scoring, but took a ton of shots. Davis quietly had a solid season for the Wolves and quietly takes the MVP honors.

New Orleans Hornets- Jamal Crawford

Who else would it be? Jamal Crawford has been amazing for the New Orleans Hornets. Last season people thought he had a great year, but this year, he has upped his average by 7 ppg. He was 2nd in the league in points as well as free throw percentage. Crawford was the heart and soul of this team. No doubt.

New York- Kyrie Irving and James Harden (tie)

New York had an amazing roster. Kyrie Irving and James Harden were great and an important part of this teams success. They had almost identical stat lines so they are sharing the MVP award. This may be the best backcourt in the league and they will be together for a very long time.

Oklahoma City Thunder- Nate Wolters

This has been a rebuilding year for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Both rookie Nate Wolters and big man Tyler Hansbrough out played expectations but especially Wolters. The rookie out of North Dakota State looked like a very good young point guard. He averaged 4 more assists than the next best player on the team. He also was 2nd on the team in scoring and led them is steals. He will go into next season as the incumbent for the starting point guard spot.

Orlando Magic- N/A

The Magic had several players worthy of their MVP award, but no one played enough games for the team. They have had 2 players that scored more than 12 ppg while playing over 35 games. One of those players was Wes Johnson, the other was Tyreke Evans. Some would look at this roster and say Evans is the MVP, but I would say no. Evans took a ton of shot and was not very efficient. He may have even hurt the team at times.

Philadelphia 76ers- Damian Lillard

This Philadelphia 76ers team has so many weapons that it is hard to chose an MVP. Lillard played great and most importantly, was able to distribute the ball and keep everyone happy. He is only 23 years old and has a bright future in the City of Brotherly Love.

Phoenix Suns- Josh Smith

The Phoenix Suns were ravaged by injuries and were finally able to get things going late in the season. Forward Josh Smith was highly criticized but played well all year. He was able to average a double double and also put up over a steal and block a game. The Suns could very well make a nice run into the playoffs.

Portland Trail Blazers- Dwight Howard

Dwight Howard, Joe Johnson and Manu Ginobili were a great big 3 for the Portland Trail Blazers. Dwight Howard proved why he was the big addition this offseason. He led the league in rebounding. Superman was also very efficient on the offensive end, ending up 3rd in the league in shooting percentage. The third big aspect of his game was his ability to protect the rim. He was able to swat 1.3 shots a game, good enough for 6th in the NLL.

Sacramento Kings- Paul George

The Kings have a great starting lineup, the centerpiece of that lineup is small forward Paul George. George really had a breakout season and became one of the league’s stars. He is an all around player and will be an important part of the King’s future.

San Antonio Spurs- Deron Williams

The Spurs have about 5 guys deserving of this award, but Deron Williams takes it. He was number one in the league in assists. D-Will has also been clutch at the line, sinking about 97% of the shots he takes.

Toronto Raptors- Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant may be the league’s number 1 player. He led the league in scoring and blocks. He was also ranked in the leagues top 25 in all five major categories, scoring, rebounding, assists, blocks and steals. Durant may not only be the best player on the Raptors for a long time, but might be the best player in the league for a long time.

Utah Jazz- CJ McCollum

Rookies CJ McCollum and Victor Oladipo both really showed up for the Utah Jazz. McCollum averages 17.3 ppg as well as 5.1 apg. Either McCollum or Oladipo will be likely to be traded once Derrick Rose becomes fully healthy.

Washington Wizards- Gordon Hayward

This season was a huge letdown for the Wizards. They were hoping to make the playoffs but they are far from it and are up the river without a paddle. Gordon Hayward was a bright spot for the team putting up solid numbers.
