NLL Insider - Per 48 Minute Statistical Leaders

by greenmig, updated on Thursday, April 03 2014, 01:53 pm EST

So as the regular season draws to a close I thought it would be fun to look at the season’s statistics on a per 48 minute basis.  We all know who are the STATS leaders as per the stats page but who are the guys who really get it done on a per 48 minute basis?  In a lot of cases it’s the same guys but sometimes this sheds a little light on why some teams are so good.  I have looked at basic stats as well as some calculated stats or more advanced stats.  The categories I have looked at are:

Rebs, orebs, blks, stls, asts, tos, ast/to ratio, fgm, fga, 3pM, eFG%, DEF (stls + blks), fta

They are all on a per 48 minute basis.  I have also applied some criteria to the data sets only considering players who have played more than 50 games and average more than 15 minutes per game.

For each dataset I present the top 10 players graphically using colorful bubbles or balls – yay for colorful balls! J (as usual the size of the balls is scaled to reflect the magnitude of the data point).  I will add a little bit of commentary where I see fit.  So here goes…enjoy!

No surprise here!  We all know Reggie Evans is a beast on the boards and he sits almost 2 rebs clear of the nearest guy in Varejao who is also extremely active.  The Spurs have had a big year and Evans’ activity off the bench has been key.  Some big names in Drummond, Howard and Duncan round out the top 5.

Trevor Booker?  Really?  This guy plays fairly minor minutes for the Magic – maybe he should be getting more time.  This stat is all about hustle and the top 5 guys personify this in Booker, Evans, Hayes, Koufos and Hill.  Also a Psycho-T sighting in 6th!

Rookie Withey came out of college with a reputation for fly swatting and here he is, leading the league in this stat – one bright spot for the Rockets.  Perhaps he should get more playing time?  Matt Barnes sits second, his defensive mindedness a key in the Lakers success.  Channing Frye is 8th – whoever thought Channing was a shotblocker?

Super Mario leads the league here.  His defensive mindset has been key in making the Lakers the 2nd ranked defensive team in the NLL.  No surprise to see thieves like Rubio, Conley in 2nd and 3rd.  Rookie MC-Dub comes in 8th and Stephen Curry in 9th, does he actually play defense?

Deron of the Spurs leads assists followed by Rubio, Lin and Lawson.  But how about LBJ making the top 10 – wow this guy is ridiculous.

This is on stat you shouldn’t be proud of.  Dragic leads the NLL in giveaways followed closely by Lillard and IT2.  The Warriors have got two guys in the top 10 in Lawson and Vasquez – not good.

Rubio has the safest hands in the NLL with the best ast/to ratio.  Followed closely by Williams.  Interestingly the Pacers have two guys in the top 10 in Knight and Lin.  And there’s that guy again, LBJ in the top 10 – impressive.

Most of these guys are in the running for the league MVP.  But how about that guy Gerald Green?

Rumor has it that he will be unleashed in week 19.

Wow – Jamal almost jacks up a fga every minute – 5 more than any other player, even KD!  His team looks to be missing the playoffs so maybe this isn’t a good thing?

Mr 2K Glitch himself Dorell Wright leads 3pM.  Sorry sheed but let’s face it this guy really is broken!

BOS’s Batum and SA’s Matthews have also been a massive part of why these teams are so good.  Randy Foye never saw a 3fg he didn’t like nor did Thornton.  Spurs, with two guys in the top 10.  Is this the key to winning in 2K?

eFG% is calculated as eFG% = (fgm + 0.5*3pM)/fga.  This category is dominated by the big men.  Those guys who make most of their shots as dunks.  Everyone focuses on LBJ in Cleveland but check out Drummond at #1 and Ibaka at #8.  The Cavs have two guys in the top 10 to clean up any misses and dunk them home.  The Lakers also have two guys in Chandler and RotY favorite Mason ‘Plumdog’ Plumlee.

Rookie MC-Dub can’t shoot the ball but this kid can play defense.  Leading the league in the DEF category, (stls + blks).  He is followed by serial pest Barnes of the LAL.  LMA of PHI comes in 3rd to some surprise and Turner of NY in 4th.  KD round out the top 5 – wait KD?  I guess the guy is 6’11.

The Nuggs have been a big surprise to many but there is one guy who has been a big reason why.  John Wall leads the league in FTA’s.  This guy shoots a staggering 20% more ft’s than anyone else – c’mon ref’s are you on this guy’s payroll?  And we all know that ft’s are most efficient way to get points - right.  Young at 7th and Hickson at 9th are the only bigs in the top 10.

Hopefully this was a fun read.  If anyone has a stat they want included let me know.
