NLL Insider - Smokey's Draft Grades by smokey, updated on Monday, June 26 2017, 06:10 am EST With So many trades happening over the last few weeks, and through the draft I thought it might be a good Idea to go through and document the major movements for every team. There will be things missing, but I did my best to find each trade and put together a list of what/who is moving where.
To go with this is a list of who everyone drafted this year. I try to be positive in my write up and thought on each team, instead of bringing them down. I hope you enjoy.

ARRIVING:
#15, #18
DEPARTING:

Frahm kept his cards close to his chest in the lead up to
the draft. Plenty of speculation as to who was going #1,
but the decision was probably the right on in the end.
Fultz will lead this franchise for years to come, and they
now have a great centre piece to build around. Trading back
for #15 and #18 was still a solid move, but personally I
feel Zach Collins would have been a nicer piece for the
future. But don’t get me wrong Patton and Jackson are still
2 very nice pieces moving forward.

ARRIVING:
Trevor Ariza, AJ Hammons, 2019 2nd (LAL)
DEPARTING:
Patrick Patterson, 2018 1st (MIN), 2018 2 nd (CHI)
|
With No draft picks coming in, Jmac looked to the trade
table and brought back Trevor ariza after he was traded
after their finals loss last year (is that correct Jmac?)
And AJ Hammons. We know what Ariza brings to the table, but
AJ Hammons should be able to bring some crash and bash off
the bench and some rim protection.

BROOKLYN NETS.

|
ARRIVING:
Khris Middleton
DEPARTING:
Goran Dragic, Tony Snell
|
Wizkid and his nets also didn’t bring in any draft picks
for this year, but what he did do was bring back Khris
Middleton as a better option at the 3, which will push
Demar Derozan back to the shooting guard spot. His roster
is extremely well rounded now and has a starting 5 that’s
ready to compete with any in this league.

ARRIVING:

Digga is definitely not scared to reach for a prospect he
thinks fits the bill. He did it at #11 last year with
Dejounte Murray, and again this year with the #13 pick.
Harry Giles however is an extremely talented player. If it
wasn’t for his injuries he is easily a top end talent.
Digga is out to prove everyone wrong, and show the league
that the Hornets are ready to compete and he isn’t against
winning. Maybe now is the time to move on some of his
extremely talented youngster for some star power?

ARRIVING:
Joakim Noah, Jameer Nelson
DEPARTING:
Meyers Leonard, Jamal Crawford, #44, 2019 2nd
(CHI)
|
Although Noah has a large Contract, He adds some much
needed inside protection at the rim for the Bulls. Daz took
his Bulls to the 7th seed this year, and will
surely be looking to build on that again next. The thing
is, the East isn’t getting any weaker at the top, so some
big performances from his team will be required to have
another run at the playoffs next season. Dirk Nowitzki’s
Team option has been declined, in a hope he will sign for
less next season. Let’s hope the Big German doesn’t screw
Daz over again like he did when he walked out with an A
loyalty.

Pistol is not a heavy trader like some. He has come in to
the league with a talented roster and pretty much kept it
all together besides a few logical moves. With the
confidence still around that the Cavs are not far away,
There are some nice assets on this team that could bring in
some good depth. But Pistol needs to become more aggressive
with his trading to bring in some more depth to help out
James as next year might be his last year in Cleveland.

DEPARTING:
Jerryd Bayless, Jarrett Allen (#20), 2018 1st
(BKN), 2018 2nd (MIA), 2019 2nd (GS)
|
The Mavericks decision to move into a rebuild has paid off
big time. They landed the #2 pick in the lotto and brought
in Lavar… I mean Lonzo Ball. Jonathan Isaac is a great two
way talent and was a perfect get for the Mavs at #8. They
also were able to move a few assets and bring in a solid
defensive Shooting guard in KCP, and an off the ball
shooter in Tyler Johnson. The Franchise is moving fast in
their rebuild and hope to be back in playoffs in the not
too distant future.

Damyean Dotson
|
ARRIVING:
Jose Calderon, #32, 2018 2nd (PHO)
DEPARTING:
Darren Collison
|
Great addition in Josh Hart for the Nuggest at #32. Hart
possesses the perfect tools to become a fantastic 3 and D
player. Hart might be the perfect starter for the Nuggets,
as he is great at creating space off the ball, which John
Wall will love. His defensive qualities are second to none
which could make the team more balanced, sending Eric
Gordon and his shooting to damage opposition benches.

DEPARTING:
Chris Paul, Bradley Beal, Joe Johnson, Lucas Nogueira, Pau
Gasol, Al-Farouq Aminu, #58, #59, 2020 2nd (DET)
|
I am a personal lover of what Laddas has done with this
team. The balance on his roster which he has built around
Ben Simmons is amazing considering where the team was at
when he took over. Losing talent Like CP3, Beal and even
Gasol to an extent is tough, but the future is now bright
for the Pistons. Laddas would have s**t the bed when
Memphis took his Man fox at 5, but in the end everything
turned out well and he got his man. Also picking up a
supreme talent in Mitchell at #16. Now…. Be bloody Patient
with your roster and maybe go to traders anonymous to get
some help with your trading addiction.

|
ARRIVING:
Lucas Nogueira, Nicolas Batum
DEPARTING:
Luol Deng, Donovon Mitchell (#16)
|
The story here isn’t the draft, but what Mailo did in some
trades. Bringing in a player like Batum to bolster the
starting 5 was a great move. The Warriors snuck into the
playoffs this year, and the addition of a solid team player
can only help them move forward. Personally I think Batum
is a little slow for the SG position, but stats don’t lie
and he plays the 3 and the 4 virtually the same. Nogueira
adds some more depth to an already young and talented big
brigade. It will be fun to see where Mailo takes this team
in the coming years, and what the plans are for the roster
as a whole.

Pushing the eventual champs to 7 games in the 1 st round of the playoffs was a huge story for
this franchise. The next big story is will Gordon Hayward
going to stick around to see where this team can go?
Personally I think Vitt has done a great job at pushing the
team to the limits and getting them into the playoffs, and
I think that should be enough for Hayward to stick around.
There are a few holes in the roster that will be filled
either via trades, or FA, but nothing to note here at this
stage as it has been quiet in Houston since being
eliminated from the playoffs.

Malik Monk
|
ARRIVING:
#7, 2018 1st (OKC), Tony Parker
DEPARTING:
#9, #20, #30, #36, Jeremy Lamb, Anthony
Morrow
|
To get his man Malik Monk, Sheed had to move up in the
draft to #7. I don’t think the worry was Dallas Picking him
at 8, but more if the players Dallas Wanted didn’t fall to
#8 then Smokey was looking at best available which would
have been Monk. Sheed played it well and got his man, even
though he had to trade 4 draft picks to move up two spots
to do it. Tony Parker is the latest addition to the roster,
who might not play much next season due to injuries and old
legs. But the risk was worth it.

ARRIVING:
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
DEPARTING:
Alec Burks, Jonah Bolden (#25)
|
Lots of talks between GM’s who were picking between 2 and 8
were had as no one really had much of an idea how things
would fall. For the Clippers I think it worked out
perfectly. Grabbing arguably the best wing prospect at #4
and then getting who Andrew regarded as the Best PG
prospect, if not the best prospect in the draft in Dennis
Smith. It’s hard to screw up your draft when you have a
bunch of 1st round picks, and Andrew didn’t
Disappoint. Grabbing Big man John Collins at 14, and OG
Anunoby at 22 to go along with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
Things in LA are looking very bright and should start to
click very soon.

A smart player who takes the right shots and is a solid
team defender.

Dunne put a dagger in Laddas’ heart when he selected
DaAaron Fox with the #5 pick. It was all a well-planned
attack on the draft however. Not thinking that Frank
Ntilikina would fall to him at #11, Dunne didn’t want to
miss out on a top PG prospect in the draft. But when Frank
was there for him to select, He quickly got on the phone
and offered Fox to Detroit for Jayson Tatum, an extremely
smart move which now gives him two great young guys to add
to and continue to build this roster back up to success.

ARRIVING:
Lance Thomas, Maurice Ndour
DEPARTING:
Rudy Gay, Marshall Plumlee
|
Rudy Gay was bound to leave south beach, and Breece got
what he could for him. Like Portland this franchise has run
into the ground, and it’s up to Breece to get them back up.
It’s a hard road when your next two 1st round
draft picks are potentially spoken for, and with not much
worth asset wise on the roster this franchise is in for a
rough ride for years to come. They will hope their 2018 1 st falls into the top three so they can
hopefully draft a franchise player for the future.

Jarrett Allen (#20), 2018 1st

DEPARTING:
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
|
Bad wolf needed to move a piece to lessen the load on his
salary situation. KCP was the right choice. The Bucks look
extremely scary still and are prime to make another run
towards the title again next year. Bad wolf has always done
well when it comes to finding a diamond In the rough.
Whether its luck, smart scouting or he has some kind of
crystal ball, he has probably found another one in Jarrett
Allen. If most teams lost their starting SG it would hurt
them a little, but not the Bucks, they just keep on moving
forward and rotating talent as required.

WOW!
I was going to leave it at that, but I think spud would
want to read something. Yeah the Wolves lost Paul George,
but look at what they gained. Reeling from the round 2 loss
to the champs Spud said F**k this I am after you Leeroy. He
has done an amazing job at reshaping this whole roster.
With what he hopes will be a successful FA period to round
out the roster, watch out for the Wolves in the coming
season and years beyond that too.

|
As I sit here writing this, I am currently eating bacon for
lunch. No not Dwayne Bacon, actual bacon. The first thought
for me was that Trevor Ariza is worth a little more than
what was brought in, but then thinking about it probably
not. The Pels are in no man’s land and needed to move in a
certain direction. Bringing in some young talent moves them
more toward a rebuild, but it’s a start. If they can get
their big man Okafor to play with some heart and passion
and leadership in a few years with some more moves this
team will hopefully look in better shape and moving
forward.

Tim and his Knicks were so close this season, but once
again came to face the Spurs who stole the game 7 decider.
Tim is a smart GM and will make the required moves to be
back up the top once again next season. He firstly brings
in Swanigan who is another big with a lot of potential.
With Milsaps future up in the air the Knicks will lick
their wounds and find a way to get better again.

Ben just keeps loaning out money (gm pts) and keeps getting
richer in the meantime. With so much depth on your team, it
was time for Ben to bring in an absolute superstar, and
paul George is that. Paired with Jimmy Butler, Nikola
Jokic, Draymond Green just to name a few this is another
franchise out to still be in contention for that elusive
title that everyone so desperately wants. Not only did he
get George, he replaced his depth with depth. Burks,
Jenson, Kennard, Bolden and even Lydon are all capable to
come in and contribute right away off the bench. Watch out
for OKC next season.

To trade your best three players is always a big decision
to make. Javi has done alright, not brilliant out of this.
The new starting line-up definitely doesn’t look as scary
as it was. Lauri Markkanen was the Magic’s first pick, and
although I personally like Markkanen, I didn’t see him as a
top 10 pick. But you never know with these big white guys
from Europe, he might have another Dirk on his hands. He
also might have another Darko Milicic on his hands. All in
all though it’s not doom and gloom as Tony Bradley and
Derrick White were both good solid picks also.

DEPARTING:
#15, #18, #48, C.J McCollum, Salah Mejri, Bojan Bogdanovic,
JJ Redick
|
With the cap squeeze approaching, VT needed to make some
quick/smart moves to move this franchise forward but still
be able to compete. Trading out McCollum would have been
hard, but the return is a very good one for the 76ers. My
favourite trade was trading up to #10 where he selected
Zach Collins. Previously I didn’t know much about Collins,
but since reading this is a great selection for Dave, and
will bolster up the big man stocks immediately. Originally
looking for PG help through the draft, VT has gone out and
acquired Darren Collison and Isaiah Whitehead and it paid
off by then being able to land Zach Collins.

|
ARRIVING:
#44, 2019 2nd (CHI), Meyers Leonard, Jodie Meeks
DEPARTING:
Joakim Noah
|
The Suns were able to ship out Noah’s contract for a
younger and cheaper guy in Leonard. He Still has some
growing as a player to do, but to move towards the future
that was a good move. Penny is probably in a hard spot
right now, with the aging (but still dominant) Horford, and
Kemba walker the only real great pieces, Penny needs to add
some very helpful players around these two if they are to
push for playoffs next season. Hardaway and Chandler
aregood pieces to have around their stars, But I expect
penny to make some savvy moves and hit FA with everything
in preparation for next year.

Toby was invested in this draft, and it showed when he
moved a 2018 1st which he acquired not long
before for a couple of picks in the 30’s and a future 2 nd rounder. It’s not a terrible move, as the
pick most likely will be a late 1st rounder, but
these hold value down the track and are easier to move to
acquire talent which Portland desperately need. With Rudy
Gay coming on board (if he can re-sign him) I think that’s
a nice move for what he gave away for him, but it now comes
down to how these young guys can develop in the next couple
of years. It’s a long road ahead for Toby, but hopefully he
can pull this franchise out of the black hole it’s in.

ARRIVING:
Marshall Plumlee, Pau Gasol, Al-Farouq Aminu
DEPARTING:
Kyle Kuzma (#24), Nicolas Batum
|
Things didn’t click at the end of the season as the Kings
went down to the Spurs 4-1 in the conference finals. No
draft picks coming in this year,Klem brings in Pau Gasol. A
nice move which is definitely a win now move, but that’s a
great attitude to have in this league. Pau will bring some
fire power up front, but I think there is a few more moves
to be mad to be able to contend once again next season.
There is a hole at the SG position in my opinion, and I
don’t feel Boban is the right fit for the big man rotation.
Klem will be smart and witty this off season and be sure
not to write of the Kings next year as they will continue
to build a winning formula.

The Champs have been off celebrating their recent
championship, they almost forgot that they still had work
to do to continue into next season. With Tyler Johnson the
only depature so far, the Spurs have also added two great
draft choices that will help immediately in their title
defence. They will also bring over draft stash Adam Hanga
who was drafted way back in 2011. Nothing else to see here
at all as Leeroy will get set to attack next season just as
viciously as he did this year.

Carl was so excited to have a top 10 pick in this years
draft, only to have it taken away by Laddas. But he gained
Bradley Beal which is a massive asset to have moving
forward. From a team who were built around Crowder who is a
great role player at best, now to have a centre piece in
Beal is a great start. Pieces like Bogdanovic and Chandler
will help bulk up this roster too. Ivan Rabb was Carl’s
first selection in the draft, and Rabb Is a very talented
post player, but has no real perimeter game. But the Talent
is there for him to grow and learn off Chandler moving
forward.

CP3, CP3, CP3!!! Another team who is going all oout to
challenge for the title next season. Merencio gave up
Oladipo, who was probably a little down on expectations
from the front office this year, and Kenneth Faried. They
now possess a starting 5 with Marc Gasol, Aldrich, Wiggins
and Paul. Cauley-Stein is going to become a solid big man,
and I expect Merencio to attack the FA market to build a
team who can contend with the best of them.

The Wizards were back in the playoffs this year, but lacked
polish to do any damage. The building blocks of Randle and
Thompson are there and Darko went and added some real Vet
sharp shooting in Jamal Crawford and Joe Johnson. Frank
Mason should come in and help in the point guard rotation
off the bench. The Wizards were in a bit of a dark place
for the last couple of years, but are now looking forward
and with some smart managing they will continue to grow
into the future. They hold a 1st round selection
next year, and three the year after….. Darko, Don’t trade
them!
