NLL Insider - Kings/Warriors Game 1 Recap

Game 1 Breakdown

It looked for a minute - well a lot of minutes - like the Warriors could shock everybody and steal the first game. The Warriors frontcourt did exactly what MaiLo wanted them to do, space the floor out and hit jump shots. This allowed t Warriors to keep it within reason. When the bench came into the game, Luol Deng and Shabazz Muhammad gave them some huge minutes and got them a lead. The two bench wings combined for 32 points in 32 minutes while only putting up 19 shots.

Carmelo Anthony, back from his recent injury, started off strong with 9 points in the first - but completely disappeared in the second, with his only point coming off of two free throws and his only other stat being a single rebound. He seemed quiet, but looking through the play by play, his name only shows up on missed shots from the 11 minute mark of quarter 2 until half time. This team might be able to hang close with this disappearing act in the first round, but going up against a team like OKC in round 2 will slaugter them. Reggie Jackson getting 18 points on 12 shots to give the starters a boost and also keep the bench afloat was a nice surprise from the guard who has had a very up and down year.

The second half turned the tide as Melo got himself back in the game. Heading into the locker room with their heads hanging, the Kings got torn into by their coach - KLEMMELO himself storming down to the locker room and berating the team for not playing through their star forward. The team responded nicely - up 13 by the end of the quarter.

The Kings may have just needed a half to adjust to the 5-out style of the Warriors, but once they figured it out, this didn't look like much of a matchup. They were +21 in the second half and their starting unit dominated that of the Warriors.

Golden State needs to make a starting lineup change immediately! Do almost anything different - because that group playing like this is just unacceptable. This is worse than Trailblazer bad (sorry Toby). They were minus 31 in 27 minutes. Minus Thirty-One! That's worse than giving up a point per minute - and these are your starters. Even if the team is overmatched, they have to do something. Start Deng and Muhammed to reward them for showing up in game one. Put Barnes as a stretch 4? I don't know... but this isn't it.

We'll stay in the more northern part of California for one more game before heading south to San Francisco for game 3. Technically, this is a huge win if the Warriors can steal one away from Oracle. Even if they don't, holding home court allows them to try and steal one later in the series. This isn't over, but swift corrections are needed.
